The Dump: Genesis Emulators

Bloodlust Software's Genecyst

The many features of Genecyst include a real-time save/load, GRiP support, Game Genie codes, and most of all, blindingly fast emulation! As of version 0.30, raster effects are now implemented, allowing nearly every Genesis game to be faithfully emulated.

Steve Snake's KGen

KGen was the first emulator to support true digital audio, but there's far more to KGen than quality sound emulation. The author (and former Genesis game developer), Steve Snake programmed KGen from the ground up, focusing on making it the fastest and truest Genesis emulation available. Although for the time being, Genecyst has the edge over KGen for compatibility, KGen boasts the most faithful sound and music emulation.

Melody Software's St0rm

Coded by Spanish programmer David Sanchez Primo, St0rm is his attempt at programming a Genesis emulator. While David downplays his achievement, saying that "St0rm isn't a good emulator now", it's surprisingly fast and compatible for an early alpha release. While the speed is still behind Genecyst and KGen, it's quite a bit faster than both VGen and GenEM, and boasts roughly a 50% compatibility rate. Programmed in a mixture of C and ASM, sound emulation is incomplete but almost everything else is emulated.

Jason Meehan's VGen

A new addition to the Genesis emulator family, VGen is coded in a mix of C and Assembler using Djgpp and NASM. The 68000 emulation is courtesy of Neill Corlett. As it stands, VGen is substantially slower than both KGen and Genecyst, and many games do not work properly or at all. However, this emulator is still in its early stages, and for a first release, it shows a lot of promise.

Markus Gietzen's GenEM

GenEM was the world's first Genesis emulator, and despite the lack of speed, GenEM has a fairly good compatibility rate after only a few months of development. Unfortunately, Markus Gietzen has discontinued the GenEM project, and has once again removed himself from the emulation scene.
