Joel Siegel (1943-2007)

Joel Siegel, who left us too soon Friday after reviewing movies and theater for three decades for WABC-TV and "Good Morning America'' -- bravely battling cancer for the last 10 years -- was a real mensch and one of the nicest guys I've known in this profession. A few years ago, I took my father-in-law Sam, a veteran of the Russian army during World War II, to a screening of "Enemy at the Gates.'' Joel not only chatted with Sam, whom he had never met, for 15 minutes before the screening, but kept asking about Sam as late as last month. Joel was also an estimable Oscar handicapper who could deliver a devastating pan. Here's a link to his famous review of the legendary Broadway flop "Carrie.'' Our condolences to his family.
