Keith Richards on Recording With Jack White, New Rolling Stones LP

If Keith Richards has his way, the Rolling Stones will start working on a new record next year. “I’m trying to gather the boys together,” he tells Rolling Stone. “One way or another, I’ll get them back in line.” In the meantime, the guitarist recently recorded songs with Jack White. “I enjoy working with Jack,” Richards says. “We’ve done a couple of tracks.”

12 Shades of White: The Many Guises of Jack White

Might White produce the Stones record? “I couldn’t fuel that rumor any more than to say Jack and I are in touch,” says Richards. Meanwhile, Mick Jagger and Richards are sorting through outtakes from 1972’s Exile on Main Street for a forthcoming deluxe edition of the LP. “There’s new songs on there, stuff we’ve forgotten about,” Richards says. “Mick and I were looking at each other like, ‘Ah, did we do that?’ ” (Look back at the making of Exile.)

Finally, Keith is still working on his long-awaited autobiography. “I’m working on it with James Fox,” he says. “I’m trying to remember things, which is very difficult.”

jack white is rock and roll right now.

JaJa | 9/4/2009, 9:17 pm EST

This would be the greatest comeback in rock and roll history. It just has huge success written all over it.

Joey | 9/4/2009, 9:10 pm EST

Look Jack White is talented. Dylan, the stones, the who, Page have all worked with this guy cause he is good and he is the future of rock and roll, he is the next in line to take the reigns. I would love to see Jack play guitar for the stones cause lately for me at least Ronnie has been a bit of a let down. And yes Daryll Jones has earned the recignition of full membership when will these guys finally give it to him?

PINK FLOYD | 9/4/2009, 8:59 pm EST

My brothers, neighbor, aunts, son in law knows what Keith knows and keith isn’t really in awe on Jack White. But he does like to hang with the guy. This article is really important in the world or ROCK

maybe i should give Jack White a chance…so far, i just haven’t got what is so special about his music.

comment | 9/4/2009, 7:52 pm EST

So, Carl, “Jack White is not a huge talent. Many times people latch on to the flavor of the month for the buzz of it. Believe me, Keith isn’t in awe of Jack White”
No one said he was, he certainly didn’t, and doesn’t need to, but with the Pages, Dylans, Townshends, etc. infinitum, you’re saying they all latched onto a “flave of the month” all at the same time?
It couldn’t be because they have seen it and done it all, and can pick out the next torch bearer out of the crowd quite easily…maybe the guy just “has it” Simple as that…yet the jealousy prevails….

Mr Darkbottom | 9/4/2009, 5:31 pm EST

It might be really great, give it a chance.

MatsFan1 | 9/4/2009, 4:23 pm EST

So, Jack White is not a huge talent because Keith Richards is not in awe of him? You’d be hard pressed to find ANYONE who Keith Richards is in “awe” of.

Laurence Bradley | 9/4/2009, 4:19 pm EST

I’d love to see Jack White work with the boys to finally make the great, post-Some Girls, Stones album we’ve all been hoping for. I’d also love to see Jack tour with the Stones, but I doubt he’d be willing to take 2 years off from his own projects for the tour. But, we can always hope….

Hogan | 9/4/2009, 1:37 pm EST

I disagree I think Jack White is a huge talent, he is the real deal. Sure you can’t compare him to Richards, the guy’s been playing for half a century, but of all the new age guitar players out there I think this guy’s the real deal.

Palafox | 9/4/2009, 10:45 am EST

Who parked Keith’s walker?

Carl in NY | 9/4/2009, 8:57 am EST

Dred | 9/4/2009, 6:59 am EST

An amazing extra to the Exile box set would be the unreleased live album from the 1972 US tour.

Jerry | 9/4/2009, 1:22 am EST

“Hold on Keith, I’m going to have to get back to you on producing your next Rolling Stones album. I’m currently doing a movie with Jimmy Page and Edge.”

That prick is living the life.

Blake | 9/4/2009, 12:42 am EST

Hey man that makes sense because Jack can play great, he writes awesome songs, he is an awesome singer and a great producer who has revitalized not only Loretta lynn’s career but rock and roll in general. The stones don’t need Ron Wood and all his baggage with his substance problems and his 18 year old wife. And yes I too think Daryll Jones should be an official member of the stones. He’s earned it.

Jackinthebox | 9/4/2009, 12:33 am EST

Yeah get Jack White to play guitar in the stones and make Daryll Jones an official member too. Let Jack contribute some songs to the album and with the combined efforts of Jagger/Richards/White you’ll probably end up with the best stones record ever. A true masterpiece that would finally prove once and for all that the stones are the greatest rock and roll band of all time.

John | 9/3/2009, 11:28 pm EST

The stones need to work with White. Look what he’s done for Loretta Lynn. i would love to see a hard core bluesy stones again.

Clint Hewetson | 9/3/2009, 11:10 pm EST

Dude. Its so refreshing to see such an effortless juxtaposition of new and old. These cats are kindred spirits and will bring the best out of one another. Jack White is all that is right with rock and roll, and Keith and the rest of the boys help write the book. Stoked.

John | 9/3/2009, 9:15 pm EST

I hope that this happens. Jack White is a talented man and I bet he could really bring something great out of the stones, the likes of which have not been seen in years.

Don | 9/3/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Has anyone else heard the rumours that Charlie Watts quit the rolling stones yesterday. It was all over the internet yesterday and now it’s said to be false, but one can’t help but wonder. It’s hard to imagine the stones without Watts. Do you think they could go on without him? They survived Jones, Taylor, and Wyman leaving could they survive Watts?

Jud Richards | 9/3/2009, 8:36 pm EST

I just got a boner

Don | 9/3/2009, 7:59 pm EST

Well that’s an opinion really, I enjoyed many other stones albums such as Some girls, Tattoo You,Voodoo Lounge, as well as older albums like Aftermath and Between the buttons. But I agree that nothing has ever really topped the Miller albums for me. But I think Jack White is an extroidinary talent and could make an awesome stones record.

Milo Davis | 9/3/2009, 6:38 pm EST

The only good Rolling Stones albums were the ones that Jimmy Miller produced, “Beggar’s Banquet”, “Let it Bleed” “Sticky Fingers” “Exile on Main St” “Goats Head Soup”

Anonymous | 9/3/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Don, I like how you think. Jack White doesn’t have to commit to being a full-time Stone. Just do one tour…probably their last.

I saw the stones in 2005 and they are far from dead my friends, they still rock. But from what I’ve heard lately Ron Wood isn’t doing so good. In fact there have been rumours that if he doesn’t clean up he could be fired from the stones. I’ve also heard that the white stripes aren’t touring because Meg White has problems with anxiety. It seems clear to me that Ron Wood is holding The stones back, and Meg is holding Jack White back. So here’s my idea. How cool would it be if Jack White became the new guitar player in the rolling stones. It would be awesome, you know it. What do you all think?

I can’t believe the lack of respect from some of you people. Have some tact. And if you have any soul whatsoever, hold on to it tight bc Keith will steal it while u sleep!

Natch | 9/3/2009, 2:21 pm EST

To JJDD

So let me get this straight, you only listen to bands that have been together a short period of time and then break up so as not to get old and boring ?

You are an idiot, you sir ( or madam) should fuck off and die ( hopefully soon- your getting old and boring )

JJGG | 9/3/2009, 2:01 pm EST

Can someone please force retirement onto the Rolling Stones, even internet articles like this one blow mildew smell out of computer speakers…! Fuck off and die Keith Richards…!

JJGG | 9/3/2009, 1:50 pm EST

Has anyone had enough is this recycle? How many times do you need to hear about groups from the 1960s and 1970s? Even Jack White is becoming an aging rock star…! Yawn…! Boring…! Overplayed…!

Ari | 9/3/2009, 1:45 pm EST

A Zepp album? I’d be fired up about that. A new Strolling Bones CD? Yeah right. The last time they made a good album was in 200 B.C.

Anonymous | 9/3/2009, 12:10 pm EST

I would LOVE to see the Stones avoid another mega stadium tour and do theaters. Look at how cool Scorsese’s film was of the Stones playing the Belmont in NYC. They should play theaters, stop playing a lot of their warhorses, and dig deep into their amazing music library. Sign me up for that!

THE BEST EVER | 9/3/2009, 11:45 am EST

Whatever they release, I’ll buy it. Whatever the cost of a ticket, I’ll pay it. There is nothing more thrilling than the opening moments of a Stones show seeing Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on the same stage. No one come’s close.

Hamm I Am | 9/3/2009, 11:31 am EST

@ Weegie

Isn’t that a name for when your panties get stuck up your arse? Perhaps you should unravel yours and take the homophobic tendencies down a notch as well before you offend your dad. By the way, my screen name, WEEGIE, is Hamm I Am, not Hamm I Wanna Be. You might want to retire. Period. I’ve forgot more sh!+ than you’ll ever know.

X-Pensive Wino, Jr. | 9/3/2009, 11:11 am EST

I wanted to say something too.

MB | 9/3/2009, 11:08 am EST

The Stones have paid there dues. They are allowed to do whatever they want! If they came out with an album with them talking about there past id buy it. They earned the right to do that. Im not big on Jack White and I do feel hes a bit overrated but at the same time not that bad. Hes a solid B guitar player but no where in the likes of Keith as far as creavtivity and writing is concerned. Remember Keith pretty much wrote Beggers and Exile.

tumblindi | 9/3/2009, 10:56 am EST

Had a feeling something was cookin with The Stones. I don’t have strange dreams for nuthin. Been waitin to see somethin new & exciting. Loves Keith’s outfit in that pic.

Ross K. | 9/3/2009, 10:52 am EST

Jack White looks like a 2 year old compared to Keith

Hooner | 9/3/2009, 10:36 am EST

I agree with Pedro

Jungleland2 | 9/3/2009, 10:22 am EST

Jack White IS the right guy to produce the next Stones record. He might even be able to get them to only put out the 8 strongest songs instead of the 16+ on Bigger Bang (where half were filler..same with Bridges..good songs get lost in the “let’s put every song on this to get more royalties)

MegaSudz | 9/3/2009, 8:51 am EST

Would love to see the Stones with Taylor, Wood, and Wyman. Unfortunately, Bill will not fly and that is the reason he is no longer a Rolling Stone. This is according to Ronnie Wood.

Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman | 9/3/2009, 8:33 am EST

If you guys want to create some excitement, do a new album and tour with Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman back in the band. That would be an amazing show (and keep ROnnie in the lineup too!) All 6 remaining Stones…that would be historic!

Actually, he IS that good, and he is a huge talent. The heavy hitters in the biz would not associate with him if he wasn’t the real deal.

Pedro | 9/3/2009, 7:47 am EST

Jack White?!?!? What deal with the devil did this dude make??? He makes a movie with Page, now this!!! He’s NOT THAT GOOD FOLKS!

tony montana | 9/3/2009, 6:58 am EST

new stones album soon is kick ass.
the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world!
don’t think so?
listen to begger’s banquet, exile, sticky, let it bleed, some girls, aftermath, hot rocks.
oh and keith fuckin’ rocks!

TO THOSE WHO SAY... | 9/3/2009, 4:32 am EST

THAT THE STONE ARE FINISHED or other bad things… Why do YOU say things like “they should stop, retire, they’re dead” or this kind of crap… If you don’t like it, don’t buy it but shut the fuck up!!! With every thing they’ve done, they are free to do what they want and earned the right to make their music without having hatefull jerkoffs telling them what to do… You must be jealous because your life is boring..

Witterings | 9/3/2009, 3:45 am EST

New Album- Good News at all!
The greatest Rock’n Roll Band ever!!

therealrocknrolla | 9/3/2009, 3:36 am EST

1. Jack White and poser do not belong in the same sentence.
2. All new rock music is horrible? Pretty closed minded eh? Try the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and the Black Keys to name a few right away…
3. Wasn’t it fun to see Jack White and the Stones perform together in that movie of the Stones concert? Happpy to hear/see more.

Jethro | 9/3/2009, 1:30 am EST

Guess what? THE STONES ALREADY HAVE RETIRED. One new studio album in the past 12 years. Take all these reissues, B-sides, greatest hits, “deluxe” versions, and live albums and shove them straight up your rear end.

MDWG | 9/3/2009, 12:16 am EST

Maybe its time Mr. Keith to retire? While we love your music, well old music, unless you pump something new and fresh into my ears. I cannot bear to see the Rolling Stones. The one band this magazine is named after, too have its name shamed. I do however support the studio recording between Jack White and Richards. Both two of a kind and I can’t wait to see what comes of it!

Weegie | 9/3/2009, 12:11 am EST

“Hamm I Am” is the poster…..Dr. Seuess by way of the man hunk on Mad Men….obviously has a man-crush on John Hamm……..I think “Hamm I Am” prefers Judy Garland to Keith and Jack….wink wink….And er, Hamm, it’s spelled INTELLIGENCE….a very ironic word for you to misspell, yes yes ? And you might want to retire the “lol”. Fool.

Weegie | 9/3/2009, 12:01 am EST

Keef is the greatest figure in the history of Rock and Roll…hands down. Jack is his brightest student. It’s like Muddy Waters passing the torch to The Stones. Now Keef hands it to Jack the Prodigal Son. And the mook who questioned Keith’s intelligence ? Keef’s home library is legendary, and he’s a font of streetwise and natural wisdom. You don’t know s*^#t.

Jethro | 9/2/2009, 11:04 pm EST

Jack White should “put the blues back in the Stones”? In case you missed it, the Stones last album was plenty blues based, and “Back of My Hand” was the purest blues the Stones have done in ages. The Problem with the Stones as I see it is they haven’t been adventurous enough, and have barely been releasing any new music. Enough reissues, thanks.

tim | 9/2/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Partyed with the Keith man on Jost Van Dyke, tiny British Virgin Island several years ago.He just showed up at the tent camp schack on the beach about 11 pm, smoked drank & played music till sun-up. Came back & did the samething a couple nights later. A true gem, nice guy!

Rosie | 9/2/2009, 8:46 pm EST

I agree with Chris. All the new rock music is horrible. After the grunge era it went down the drain. I absolutely love the White Stripes because they have that classic rock/blues influence.

Dan | 9/2/2009, 8:32 pm EST

I love them both, but I think they’re probably the two ugliest people in the business.

Daniel | 9/2/2009, 8:28 pm EST

If Jack White can recharge the Stones- fine. I like him. But that Bond theme was the absolute worst yet.

This is great news all around. God bless Keith, the Stones and Jack !

As for the debate about bass less bands, The Doors didn’t have a bassist either & they did pretty good for themselves. ( yes , I know they had a bassist play on a few albums , but when they played live they were a bass less band)

Bayliss21 | 9/2/2009, 7:07 pm EST

All i can do is a facepalm when someone who would potentially love the stripes dismisses them because of the lack of a bassist. Are we really having that conversation in 2009? Does the black keys get held to that same standard? I can name a few other bands that don’t get this tired criticism. Break a rock & roll convention and rock & roll “rebels” yell foul. Its pathetic. Listen to Jack White’s Fly Farm Blues or China Pig by the Stripes if you had any doubt that the Stones are in bad hands.

Danzbassman | 9/2/2009, 5:12 pm EST

Jack White working with the Stones could be great. While I don’t care for the White Stripes (no bass player!) The Racontuers and Dead Weather both rock. Even liked JW’s theme for the Bond movie.

Jon | 9/2/2009, 5:04 pm EST

That could be a really interesting collaboration. Jack White has many of the same blues and country influences that the Stones did in their early days. Plus, he emphasizes live recordings using vintage equipment, and the Stones could stand to get away from the highly-produced stuff they’ve done in recent years.

Greg | 9/2/2009, 5:01 pm EST

Jack White is trying to deconstruct rock music back to it’s raw, unproduced blues roots. More power to him! It’s about the moment, not about the shine you can put on the music in a recording studio. Jack White’s music has feel and passion, something sadly lacking from most of today’s studio produced drones.

Keef! | 9/2/2009, 4:56 pm EST

Gotta love Keef Richards. The man knows how to keep it real.

I can’t believe the suggestion that Jack White is a poser. Clearly written by someone with absolute shite taste in music.

Name one song of his? Ever heard of 7 Nation Army? Probably the best, not to mention catchiest, rock and roll tune to come out in the last 10 years.

I’ve seen the White Stripes, the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather live on multiple occasions. Anyone who has seen Jack with any of these bands will know that he is the real deal. Not to mention his appearance with the Stones on the Shine a Light doc that Scorcese did. I was feeling that chemistry. Hopefully he produces their next record!

Hey Chris,

You want to hear some kick-ass blues music? Band of Skulls. Those guys (and a girl) kick out the jams.

And for the record, I would never, ever, EVER listen to those bands you mentioned that should not be mentioned.

And Jack White is still overrated.

Hamm I Am | 9/2/2009, 4:46 pm EST

@ AC

Your literal interpretation of religious lore does seem ridiculous, now that you put it like that. You’ve won my vote! When your dad knocks off, have him cremated, bring him over with a couple of kilos of Peruvian Pixie Stix, maybe throw in some of that lemon Jello you’ve been raving about and let’s have ourselves a party!

mrrockandroll | 9/2/2009, 4:43 pm EST

Hey ronniewrec:

why not stop living in the past and try and keep up with where rock and roll is heading? I agree with what Chris said, which is basically that Jack White has saved rock music. I love both the Stones and the White Stripes (and the Raconteurs, for that matter). Thank GOD that Jack came along and is putting some guitar-based creativity back into rock and roll. Creed, Coldplay and Nickelback can SUCK IT!

Chris | 9/2/2009, 4:12 pm EST

ronniewrec,

Jack White is not overrated. He’s saving rock ‘n’ roll while shit bands that you probably listen to like Nickelback and Creed are just putting it down the drain. White is a hell of a guitar player and a hell of songwriter also. He wrote the biggest rock song of this decade, “Seven Nation Army.”

People need to stop hating on Jack White and appreciate that Richards loves him for what he’s done for rock music.

CrystalSpyder4 | 9/2/2009, 4:02 pm EST

This sounds like it would be a fantastic collaboration. As in the case with Loretta Lynn’s “Van Lear Rose”, we may see some magic here.

ronniewrec | 9/2/2009, 4:01 pm EST

Oh mhy God…more Jack White nonsense? The most overrated poser to come out in the last ten years.

He’s fooled everybody into thinking that he’s all that. Meanwhile, nobody knows one song of his.

What Keith really nnees to do is invite Mick Taylor to sit-in on the next record. He’s the guy who
made all those Exile on Main Street songs sound so good!!!

Can’t wait to hear that Exile on Main St. deluxe reissue.

White producing the Stones? Why not?

He couldn’t do worse than the Dust Brothers and Don Was.

A Jack White produced Stones record would be their biggest commerical hit in decades. Look what he did for Loretta. They have to make that happen.

Keith is God.
