MIC Student Speaks

Manipal University is an amazing place for students to continue their further studies after they are done with school and college. It is different from other institutions that offer higher education, in many ways. Apart from gaining a degree that is recognised all over the world, a student actually finishes off with an edge over the others, which is so important these days. Education in Manipal University is not just about books and classrooms. A student can achieve and accomplish many goals because of the easy access provided to a variety of facilities. Manipal University is second to none in this respect and the students are assured of the best results. Academics, personality development, honing special skills or whatever their area of interest might be, the students get complete support from the faculty and senior students.

It’s a new world and a completely new life for students stepping into Manipal Education. New friends, a lively environment, experienced faculty, renewed ambitions and inspired goals are what every student can look forward to at Manipal University. With students from different religious and social backgrounds coming together, mutual trust and sociability develops instantly, and helps make their stay at Manipal University, a more homely and unified experience. Manipal University is all about opportunity. The opportunity to make the best of friends, to meet interesting people from all over the world, to learn and grow under the guidance of the most respected academicians, to study in different universities abroad on exchange programmes, to land the best of jobs and of course, to have the best time of your life.

Life here is ‘chilled out’, yet highly productive. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, the ambience is calm, green and perfect for students. Manipal is not a city. However, Manipal is considered a city in its own right. Don’t worry about missing your home delivered pizzas or not being able to hang out with your friends at Coffee Day. Manipal has it all and none of the pollution you’d find in a city! All the dreams, expectations and apprehensions faced by a freshman are immediately embraced by Manipal. The clean and cosy hostel room, the helpful people and delicious mess food will surprise you and immediately make you feel at home. One of Manipal University’s merits is diversity. The colleges offer well-structured courses in almost any stream; be it medicine, engineering, hotel management, media or even jewellery designing. The university has 20 constituent institutions, most of which are ISO certified, that provide over 200 courses across 14 streams.

Where else will you find a place to study with people coming from all over the world and from all walks of life? Students learn to mingle with people from different cultures and socio economic backgrounds. Manipal is a potpourri of culture and this enables students to learn, appreciate and understand other cultures. The student- teacher relationship is very special. Each student gets a faculty member who acts as a mentor and is in charge of the student’s welfare. The students can approach their mentors with any problem they have, professional or personal. This can be very comforting, especially during the first few days, when one is away from home. The university takes students’ issues and problems very seriously. Any higher authority in the administration is easily accessible to a student. Personal problems are addressed by the counsellor the university appoints to help out students. Apart from this, there is also a Student Affairs Department. Every student gets Medicare which entitles them to free medical care throughout their stay in Manipal. Students are heard, respected and cared for at Manipal University.

The classroom environment is unique in Manipal University. Teachers see you at par with them as questions are answered and discussions are encouraged. This is perhaps why one finally feels the shift from school life to serious academia. Besides these, the state-of-the-art labs and other facilities make sure that once you step out into the industry, you have an edge over others. Manipal University takes the phrase, “All work and no play...” very seriously. Extracurricular activities like sports and cultural events are encouraged and nurtured. There are tennis and badminton courts, swimming pools, cricket, hockey, football fields and basketball courts and an indoor A-C sports complex to boot. There are many clubs, approved by the university, which offer a variety of activities to choose from, like an adventure club, an astronomy club, a literary club, an environment club and many more. The college fests are the most joyous time in Manipal. The University’s inter- collegiate cultural competition ‘Utsav’ is all about colourful and competitive performances. Just like its name, ‘Utsav’ time is festive time in Manipal. It sees the coming together of each and every member of the Manipal family. At ‘Utsav’, talent and entertainment is the order of the day. The same enthusiasm can be seen during individual college fests like Revels, Article 19, HOPE and many more. Each college fest has its own spirit and cause. Celebrity spotting is not a new phenomenon in Manipal. Many important people like Anil Kumble, Rahul Bose, Rahul Gandhi and George Fernandes have come down to Manipal in the past.

Foodies will find a plethora of options to satisfy their tastes. The KMC food court is the perfect place to grab a healthy and tasty bite. With a warm and welcoming interior, the food court is where students relax, enjoy their food, study and catch up with friends. You can always find a meal in Manipal to satisfy your cravings. With restaurants serving food from Andhra Pradesh to Rajasthan to Kerala etc students never feel too far away from home.

Manipal and its surroundings are made up of hills and dales, which are pretty, scenic and inviting for all those with adventure on their minds. The End Point is the ultimate place to be. The University has developed a magnificent park for people of all ages to enjoy nature’s bounteous beauty. The river Swarna can be seen winding away to the setting sun. The spectacular view of the Agumbe Rain Forests and the Kudremukh Peak can be seen towards the West. Not too far off are beautiful beaches like Kaup and Malpe. And if that’s not enough, Gorkana and Goa are just a few hours from Manipal and make for amazing weekend getaways. Outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers can have their pick of places to visit like Kudlu Falls, Jog Falls, Agumbe, Kudremukh etc. Manipal and nearby regions have many temples. The most popular among these temples are the Udupi Krishna Temple, Murdeshwar Temple, the Thousand Pillar Temple at Moodabidri and our very own Venugopal Temple on the MIT campus. The city of Mangalore is just an hour and a half away and makes a good day trip to catch the latest movies playing and may be do a little shopping.

Manipal University mixes and remixes fun, learning and growing up. The most important parts of your life are the years spent discovering who you are and what you want to be. There’s no place better than Manipal to spend those precious years.
