How to perform a 3DS System Update and create folders

Make your 3DS home menu a tidier place

You can perform a 3DS System Update from today and start creating folders for your 3DS games and apps on the 3DS Home menu. However, if you were unaware of this development, you might not know that you could do this when you turn on your 3DS today. After all, there wasn't a notification waiting for us when we switched on our console this morning, nor were we told how to create folders once we performed the update. So, this guide will tell you how to perform a System Update and create folders.

1. How to perform a system update

Go to System Settings to perform a System Update
Go to System Settings to perform a System Update
Go to System Settings, tap on Other Settings and then scroll to the fourth page to find the System Update. Connect to the internet and update the system. It takes a while so we'll see you in five minutes. Still here? Good, now your system will reset and you can start creating folders.

2. How to create folders for your 3DS games and apps

When you return to the 3DS Home menu, you won't be given any notification of what the System Update has done and you might not realise how to create a folder so allow us to take your through it.

First, tap on an empty space on your Home menu and you'll see the 'Create Folder' option appear at the bottom of the Touch Screen. Tap on that and a folder will be created for you.

Tap Create Folder to get started
Tap Create Folder to get started
You are given two options: 'Settings' and 'Open'. Tap on 'Settings' first and you can rename your folder. You can give your folder a lengthy name but only the first letter will appear on the folder. So if you want to create a folder for your 3DS Virtual Console games, give it a suitable name.

Click on Settings to get the option to rename your folder

Now you are ready to drag your games into the folder. Hold your stylus on a game icon on the Home Page and you'll be able to drag it into the folder.

Strangely, my update started automatically as soon as I opened my 3DS from sleep mode. Didn't need to go to settings or anything!

    Nice idea Nintendo!

That said, I'll have 2 folders: 'games' and 'pointless stuff which I don't need and will never use'

I've just performed the new update today, even though I don't have very much downloaded to my 3DS right now to need things kept in separate folders. But still, it'll come in handy for when my home page begins to fill up with extra Virtual Console games :)

    It's a conspiracy!!!
That, or someone's got the date wrong on their 3DS...
But I like the conspiracy idea more :D

On a more serious note, the Update is really useful! Now I have somewhere to keep all my Ambassador Games!
