Organisation and structure
The University of the Faroe Islands is a politically independent public institution.
The University of the Faroe Islands Act stipulates that:
“The University of the Faroe Islands is governed by a Board of Directors. The Rector manages the University of the Faroe Islands within the framework stipulated by the Board of Directors.”
The Board of Directors has adopted two sets of references, one for a strategy review and one for an exploration of structural opportunities at the University. For further information, please refer to the page on strategy review and restructuring.
Management
The Board of Directors is the University’s highest authority and is accountable to the competent minister. The Board of Directors appoints and dismisses the rector, deans and university director.
The current Rector is Sigurd í Jákupsstovu, who was appointed for a five-year term starting September 1, 2011.

Faculties
The University has two faculties: the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education whereMalan Marnersdóttir is Dean and the Faculty of Natural and Health Sciences where Hans Pauli Joensen is Dean.
The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education has three departments:
- Department of Faroese Language and Literature, where Jógvan í Lon Jakobsen is Programme Director for Faroese Language and Literature.
- Department of Education where Janus Jensen is Programme Director for the Primary and Secondary School Teacher Qualification Programme and Annika Antoniussen is Programme Director for the Social Education Programmei.
- Department of History and Social Sciences where Gestur Hovgaard is Programme Director for Social and Political Sciences, Hans Andrias Sølvará is Programme Director for History and Kári á Rógvi is Programme Director for Law.
The Faculty of Natural and Health Sciences has two departments:
- Department of Science and Technology where Hannes Gislason is Programme Director for IT Engineeringi, Bárður Niclasen is Programme Director for Energy and Environmental Engineeringi and Hóraldur Joensen is Programme Director for Biology.
- Department of Nursing where Súsanna Mortensen is Programme Director for Nursingi.
The University’s central administration operates at the University Central Administration Office (Setursskrivstovan) under Jørgen Meitilberg, University Director.
