Organisation and structure

The University of the Faroe Islands is a politically independent public institution.

The University of the Faroe Islands Act stipulates that:
“The University of the Faroe Islands is governed by a Board of Directors. The Rector manages the University of the Faroe Islands within the framework stipulated by the Board of Directors.”

The Board of Directors has adopted two sets of references, one for a strategy review and one for an exploration of structural opportunities at the University. For further information, please refer to the page on strategy review and restructuring.

Management

The Board of Directors is the University’s highest authority and is accountable to the competent minister. The Board of Directors appoints and dismisses the rector, deans and university director.

The current Rector is Sigurd í Jákupsstovu, who was appointed for a five-year term starting September 1, 2011.
