This program operates under the direction of the Department of Geriatrics and under the supervision of the Program Director and DME. The OGME Committee approves the procedures, policies and curriculum within the guidelines of the ACOFP. The Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education Committee (OGME) approves the procedures, policies and curriculum within the guidelines as established by the Basics Standards for Residency Training in Geriatrics as developed by the American Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic College of Family Practice. The program is ambulatory based and is flexible in design allowing for individual fellow needs to be considered within the basic framework of the required services. Geriatric fellowship training is based on the major disciplines of long term care, Hospice care, and continuity of care. Osteopathic principles and practices are integrated into the clinical rotations. In addition, there are hands-on OMM sessions, for all fellows, conducted by the OMM Team at VCOM. The program also provides training in interviewing and communication skills.
MLA - VCOM Medical Library is an institutional member of the Medical Library Association (MLA). MLA membership provides the following benefits to the librarian: annual MLA meeting attendance; networking; consumer health resources; discuss lists/listservs regarding what other hospital librarians are doing (includes MANY teaching hospitals); professional standards; newsletters; scholarly journal subscription; etc.
This program conforms to the AOA Basic Standards for Residency Training in Osteopathic Family Practice & Manipulative Treatment and the Specific Requirements of Osteopathic Subspecialty Training in Geriatric Medicine and provides fellows with the basic requirements for board certification in geriatrics.
The program includes training in Osteopathic Principles and Practices as it relates to the specialty of geriatrics. This is accomplished by offering weekly Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) workshops.
Techniques of medical writing and manuscript preparation is incorporated into the program and fellows are required to prepare one manuscript or paper suitable for publication in medical journals during their year of training.
Residents are required to maintain a logs documenting supervised procedures such as excisions, laser therapy, injectable implants, intralesional therapy, Sclerotherapy, electrocautery, hair transplant, PVA Dermabrasion, chemical peels and other dermatological surgical procedures. These are tracked through the residency management system - New Innovations.
The primary purpose of the VCOM Geriatric Fellowship Program is to offer an orderly, progressive, academic and clinically oriented program, designed to prepare the fellow for the practice of geriatrics, and ultimately, for examination and certification by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice Certification of Added Qualification Examination in Geriatrics. The program presents an opportunity for clinical applications of the practice of geriatrics under supervision and direction.
The duration of the program is a minimum of twelve (12) months following the completion of an approved osteopathic family practice residency program. The Program Director is responsible for directing the residency program and maintaining the quality of the education program. Cooperation and support of this program has been obtained from the members of VCOM.This program is approved for four fellows each academic year. Applications deadline for the 2011-12 academic year will end December 15, 2010.
