Adventure

ADVENTURE[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Melee's Adventure Mode isn't tough to beat, but there are some basic things you should know about the sidescrolling levels. Let's go through them one by one.

Stage 1[edit]

Mushroom Kingdom[edit]

The first stage of the adventure is made up of two parts, a Mario-themed sidescrolling portion that has you fight your way through Mushroom Kingdom and a fight atop Princess Peach's castle. The sidescrolling portion of the stage is a straightforward punch/kick/run romp from the left to the right. Simply follow the ground and the pipes to the right. There is no way you can get lost. The level is populated with Koopas and Goombas. You get a bonus at the end of the stage, but it doesn't matter whether you knocked out one Goomba or more -- as long as you KO one, you'll get the points. There are plenty of items in this stage as well so be sure to use them for extra bonus points. Keep an eye open for trophies. Some simply fall from the top, others can be found by destroying blocks.

A troop of Yoshis supplies the middle level boss fight. As long as there are Yoshis falling from the top of the screen, keep on using your high smash move to knock them out.

The level ends once you pass the flag pole at the very right of the stage. Watch your timer. If you finish the level with a "2" in the time, you will face Luigi. If not, it's off to fight Mario and Peach. The easiest way to take them out is to stand with your back to the middle tower and smash them off to the right or left.

Stage 2[edit]

DK[edit]

You will first face two small Donkey Kongs. Stick towards the right side of the stage and simply hit them with your medium smash move. When they try to recover, hit them again and they're history. The next battle pits you against a giant Donkey Kong. Perhaps the daddy of the previous two? Whatever the case may be, Big DK has a propensity of taking himself out if you knock him off to the right side of the stage. Since he only has a horizontal recovery jump, he tends to get stuck underneath the floorboards, then hits the water and is gone.

Stage 3[edit]

Hyrule Dungeon[edit]

The next stage takes you into Link's realm from the Legend of Zelda series of games. The rules are simple: find the Triforce and Master Sword to finish the stage. Unfortunately, the Triforce appears in one of six random spots. The other five spots serve as one-on-one battle arenas where you fight Link. You always start in the same location. The dungeon is populated with Octorocs and Redeads. Both types of enemies are easily defeated as long as you don't get too close to the Redeads. Look for trophies. They're sometimes hard to spot because the level is so dark.

If you don't mind fighting Link, the easiest way through the dungeon goes as follows:

From your starting position, work your way up and to the right. Enter the tunnel to the right to get to the first arena (1). Defeat Link and continue on to the right and down. Now go left for the second arena (2). If the exit's not here, move on  to the left and take the next tunnel down and to the right. Your third chance for an exit is off to the right (3). Defeat Link, if it's another battle, then go on to the right. Follow the shaft down and to the left for the next chance for freedom (4). If you're still here, then you're one unlucky player. Only two chances left to get out. Go to the left until you're in the main area with the platforms. Continue on to the left for the fifth arena (5). If the Triforce didn't await you, you should follow the path to the left, jump across the lava pit and follow the platforms upwards. You can't miss it now. The exit is right ahead (6).

You will now face Zelda on the Temple stage. Don't fight her in the middle of the temple (unless your damage level is high and you want to play it safe). Instead, drive her to the left, right or lower area of the stage and kick, punch and most importantly smash her off.

Stage 4[edit]

Brinstar

It's off to the land where the Metroids roam. Well, okay. There don't seem to be any left… But whether they're in captivity or not, the galaxy still isn't at peace as your first battle will prove. Due to the rising lava levels and the ability to break apart, Brinstar is a tricky level. Your best bet is to stay high on the top platform and knock Samus off whenever she tries to attack you. Don't stand right above her, though.

Stage 5[edit]

Green Greens[edit]

Stage 5 is based on the Kirby universe. Surprisingly, there is no elaborate sidescrolling level. HAL, the developer of Smash Bros. is also behind the Kirby franchise, so it's a bit of a shocker that they didn't simply pull a level from Kirby 64… Instead, you fight Kirby one-on-one on the Green Greens stage. Kirby has the nasty habit of floating back to the stage no matter how far you toss him, so be sure to cause a lot of incremental damage before you knock him off with a smash move or a bomb. Speaking of which, beware of the bomb blocks that fall into the gaps to the left and right. One wrong move and you could find yourself knocked out along with the pink puff.

Once you defeat Kirby, you will encounter a whole troop of Kirbies -- each "pre-loaded" with a different power. The Kirbies come at you in groups of three and you have to knock out all 15 of them. The winning technique is to stand in the middle of the level and smash them off in batches.

After you beat them all, it's either off to the next stage, or, if you finished the previous battle in 30 seconds or less, a giant Kirby challenges you to yet another bout. Giant Kirby is all size and no bite. Stay away from throw moves. Just cause some damage, then hit him with a smash move or an item.

Stage 6[edit]

Corneria[edit]

Next, you enter the world of Fox McCloud and his buddies. Fighting on top of the Great Fox, this battle is as much a one-on-one fight against Starfox as it is an exercise in dodging spaceship attacks. The solution is easy: don't jump. Fox himself is a pushover -- and he's even easier to beat with the help of his so-called friends.

Fight your way towards the left side of the spaceship and use your shield when the Ar-Wings attack. Oftentimes, Fox will be close to you and get hit by his friends' lasers. You can of course also throw him in the air to make sure the shots hit their target. If you want to perform the KO yourself, force Fox off to the left and punch/kick or toss an item or fire a projectile at him when he's trying to do a recovery jump back to the platform. When you defeat Fox, he will either challenge you again or sometimes even send out his buddy Falco (if you have already unlocked him). Just repeat the treatment and move on to the next stage.

Stage 7[edit]

Pokemon Stadium[edit]

Ash isn't anywhere to be seen, but that doesn't make this battle against 12 Pikachus any less annoying. Luckily, it's easy if you know what to do. Stand towards the middle of the stage, close to one of the two platforms. Pikachus will start to drop from the top. Use your upper and sideways smash moves to send their furry butts flying all the way to Johto. Watch out for the Pikachus' lightning bolts. Since they can't pass through matter, evade them by stepping underneath one of the two platforms. You should also keep an eye out for Pokeballs. Although the Pikachus are a bit slow when it comes to picking them up, you might want to preempt a cheesy death by Pokemon and toss them yourself whenever they appear.

Stage 8[edit]

F-Zero Grand Prix[edit]

The F-Zero main stage doesn't contain any enemies to beat up. Instead, it's a race from start to finish that requires you to evade the pack of F-Zero cars that rocket by every few seconds. It's a really, really easy stage -- but the moment you get overconfident you tend to get knocked off. You're safe from the hovering cars on any platform or before or after an elevation/ramp in the track (duck). All you have to do is push the analog stick all the way to the right and run as fast as you can, then jump up on a platform and pause for a moment when the cars are getting close. Take the time to check on top of the start gate that can be reached from the floating platform to its left (or directly through a triple jump from the track by some characters). Trophies often appear here or on the track right in front of the finish line.

Once you finish the race, you will face off against Captain Falcon on the extremely hazardous Mute City stage. Stay towards the middle of the stage and on top of a platform whenever there is one. If Falcon is giving you trouble, then simply block his attacks and counter immediately with a strong or smash move of your own.

Stage 9[edit]

Onett[edit]

Onett, from the RPG classic EarthBound, is home to a battle against a Ness trio. Unlike previous multi-opponent battles, Ness isn't weakened at all. So don't try to take on all three at once. Knock them out one by one. There are a few excellent spots that help make sure you won't fall victim to two-sided attacks. Put your back against the house wall to the left (the first roof above the ground) and slug away at any approaching Ness. You can knock them directly into oncoming traffic (pay attention to the "!" warning that announces an approaching car) or send them flying into the air with an upper smash move. The spot right above this one is also not bad. Stand between the bushes and take on one Ness after the other. Whenever you can, throw them off to the left. If you chose a player with a strong two-way attack (like Link's Spin Move), you can also stand on the clothesline. Just remember that the battle is over a lot more quickly if you pick a position close to the left or right stage border.

Stage 10[edit]

Icicle Mountain[edit]

This vertically scrolling Ice Climber level may feature a team of two, er, four Ice Climbers, but it's more about battling the level than about fighting. In the beginning, the whole stage slowly scrolls downward. You simply hop up and knock out any wildlife in your way. Don't waste too much time on battling polar bears as they can take some damage. Look for items as well, but don't get too greedy or you might get left behind. Soon, the stage begins to scroll rapidly and you'll be knocked out if you don't pay attention.

Pay special attention to the ice blocks. You cannot jump through them like the regular platforms. When the stage is scrolling fast, don't be scared to jump out of the screen towards the top. Unlike in melee mode, the stage will quickly follow and adjust itself. Just don't jump too far.

Once the Ice Climbers appear, try to lure them towards the left or right side of the stage and smack Bobo (the dominant Ice Climber that counts) off the screen. The Ice Climbers are better at attacking to the sides than up or down, so use this against them. Attack from below whenever you can (and if your character allows it). The Climbers usually have their hands full trying to make it through this hazardous stage, so you won't encounter much resistance.

Stage 11[edit]

Battlefield[edit]

The Battlefield special stage is home to a multi-man melee battle against a group of fighting wireframes. In case you've never encountered them, these guys looks like unfinished polygon characters. As a matter of fact, the fighting wireframes in SSBM are the successors to the polygon fighters in the original Smash Bros., but HAL replaced the untextured standard characters of the original with newly created male and female wireframe fighters. No matter what they look like, the wireframe fighters are generic attackers that lack the balance and specialties of the other SSBM characters. They're smash fodder in other words.

The best technique you can use is to stand underneath one of the two platforms and have at them with upper and sideways smash moves. Some characters, like Pikachu, Link or DK also have great non-smash attacks to deal with large numbers of opponents at once (such as Thunder, Spin or DK's ground-pounding Slap move, for example). If you ever find yourself surrounded, roll out of the way (R/L and left or right) and smash sideways.

After you knock out all Wireframes, it's time to meet Metal Mario -- and, if you've unlocked him already, Metal Luigi. To beat the metal warriors, stand underneath one of the two lower platforms and perform an upper smash move when they're right above you. As the character is knocked into the air and falls down again, charge your next upper smash move and repeat the procedure. Once you've caused enough damage this way (or the metal fighter is on the lower level), it's time to smash him or her off to the side. The fighter will try to make it back to the stage edge, which gives you plenty of time to charge your next smash attack. Repeat the procedure and your opponent will get knocked farther out every time. Characters with projectile attacks like the boomerang or Shadow Ball will want to throw it after each smash move to prevent a recovery jump and shorten the procedure. If one of the opponents happens to pass you or rolls by you, grab him and toss him back towards the edge of the stage.

Stage 12[edit]

Final Destination[edit]

It's time to face the nastiest guy in Marioland -- Bowser. Since you're fighting on the completely flat Final Destination stage, there isn't any place to hide so it's all up to your fighting skills to win. Bowser is physically strong and very heavy, so don't waste your time trying to throw him right off the bat. Start off by whittling down his energy with long-range attacks, by throwing items or shooting projectiles. When Bowser attacks with stomp or spin moves, roll out of the way, dodge, or jump. Bowser can inflict most damage when you're close, so don't approach him until his damage level is high. If Bowser uses his fire breath, double jump over it and grab him from behind (if damage is high) to toss him, or use a charge smash move to cause some major damage. Once Bowser's damage is high, lure him to the edge of the stage and smash away to end the battle once and for all.

Or so you thought. If you're playing on Normal difficulty or higher and you've made it to Bowser without using a continue (and your total time is less than 18 minutes), you will face a surprise enemy just when you thought you've knocked over the Bowser trophy and beaten the mode. The trophy will crumble and reveal the ultimate bad guy: Giga Bowser. Now, this isn't just a super-sized Bowser. We're talking all-new look here. Unless you're using Jigglypuff (who can knock out Giga Bowser fairly easily with the help of her Rest move), keep your distance until his damage level is high. Use the same strategy you used against Bowser and get ready for a smash move as soon as GB's ready to learn to fly.

Beat Giga Bowser and you will receive the Giga Bowser trophy. If you haven't beaten the mode with your current character yet, you will also receive a character trophy at the same time.

Congrats, you've beaten the Adventure mode. Now beat it again with all the other characters to get their Adventure trophies as well.
