Description
Kadokawa Shoten is an imprint of the Japanese publishing house Kadokawa Corporation, the main company of the Kadokawa Group.
The original publishing house was founded by Genyoshi Kadokawa on the 10th November 1945. The first headquarters were located in the Itabashi district of the city of Tokyo. In 1949, the paperback label Kadokawa Bunko was launched. The first title was “Crimes and Punishment” by Dostoyevsky. The headquarters were moved to the Chiyoda district the following year. In 1952, the magazine Haiku was launched.
On the 2nd April 1954, the company was incorporated as Kadokawa Shoten Co, Ltd. The company Fujimi Shoubu was founded in 1972 with the purpose of publishing learning and text books of Kadokawa Shouten.
In 1974, the subsidiary Kadokawa Bunko Distribution Center was established.
The founder Genyoshi Kadokawa died in 1975 and his son Haruki Kadokawa took over the company and became the new managing director.
In 1976, “Inugami-ke no Ichizoku”, the first of Kadokawa’s produced films, was released. Sales of the paperback edition, the adapted novel, reached over 18 million copies. The Kadokawa Novels label was launched in 1981.
On the 1st April 2003, the group underwent a complete restructuring. To this end, the company Kadokawa Shoten was renamed Kadokawa Holdings (later renamed Kadokawa Corporation). In the course of this, a new subsidiary was established with the name Kadokawa Shoten. On the 1st October 2013, the subsidiary was dissolved and converted into an imprint.
In 2007, the Kadokawa Shoten imprint was split. This resulted in the creation of Kadokawa Shoten, Kadokawa Magazines, Kadokawa Group Publishing and other smaller companies that took on various tasks.
Many companies and imprints of the Kadokawa Group were merged and dissolved in 2011 and integrated into Kadokawa Corporation. Kadokawa Shoten would still be used as a brand from time to time, but from that day onwards only KADOKAWA would be used everywhere in the company’s titles. On the 1st October 2013, the subsidiary was finally dissolved.
In early April 2015, Kadokawa decided to abandon the name “Kadokawa Shoten” and removed it from the corporate structure. In mid-August 2021, the brand’s website was also taken offline.
