- Adventure Comedy – Light-hearted adventure that makes people laugh.
- Comedy – Is supposed to make the audience laugh.
- Crime Fiction – Deals with crimes and their solutions.
- Crime Fiction Comedy – Comedy that deals with crimes and their solutions.
- Drama – Has a conflictual and dramatic plot.
- Espionage Thriller – Thriller, in which the protagonist is a secret agent or a person going undercover.
- Fighting-Shounen – Action for male teenagers which is almost solely about fighting.
- Ganbatte – The main character wants to climb to the top in a certain sport or another competitive activity.
- Ghost Stories – Creepy tales about ghosts and other beings of (Japanese) folklore.
- Hentai – A pornographic title.
- Horror – Deals with the escape from or the battle with (mostly supernatural) threatening beings. The protogonist is constantly in a frightening situation.
- Horror Comedy – Horror, in which its cause to create fear and terror for the audience is often undermined by funny elements.
- Indefinite – Can’t be assigned a specific genre.
- Nonsense-Comedy – A comedy that has an especially meaningless and crazy humor.
- Political Drama – Drama, in which political events are at the centre.
- Political Thriller – Thriller, which is about politics and its entanglements.
- Romance – Deals with romantic relationships between the protagonists.
- Romantic Comedy – A cheerful and mostly comical love story.
- Romantic Drama – A dramatic and serious love story.
- Sentimental Drama – An especially emotional drama that tries to trigger strong feelings within the audience.
- Slice of Life – This title deals with the steady and ordinary daily life of its protagonists.
- Slice of Life Comedy – Slice of life that is brightened by funny elements.
- Slice of Life Drama – A serene and sometimes mundane drama about everyday conflicts.
- Supernatural Drama – In contrast to obvious fantasy or sci-fi, this genre deals with supernatural beings or powers of which the causes are unknown.
- Supernatural Thriller – Supernatural Drama, in which the protagonists have to face a seemingly desperate situation in a suspenseful story.
- Thriller – A suspenseful story about one or more people that have to face a seemingly desperate situation.

- Fighting-Shounen – Action for male teenagers which is almost solely about fighting.
