‘Cold lava’ floods Philippines village after eruption

Footage shows rivers of cold lava following an ‘explosive eruption’ at Mt Kanlaon on Monday.

The eruption sent a plume of ash kilometres into the sky, and caused dozens of flights to be cancelled and hundreds of people to be evacuated.

Authorities said further eruptions were possible.

Cold lava is a mixture of volcanic material and pebbles which flows down the slope of a volcano in the rain.

The phrase 'cold lava' is a translation of the term "lahar" in Indonesian and Tagalog. It flows similarly to wet concrete and can travel quickly.
