Bongos appear in the Super Mario franchise as musical instruments, and often also a weapon for attacking enemies.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong 64[edit]

A pair of Bongos can be purchased by Donkey Kong at Candy's Music Shop in Donkey Kong 64. With these bongos Donkey Kong is able to use the special attack, "Bongo Blast". The attack sends out soundwaves that can defeat any nearby enemies; if Bongo Blast is used on a Bongo Blast Music Pad then it will cause an event to occur.

Donkey Konga series[edit]

Bongos appear in Donkey Konga, where they are first found by Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong half-buried in the sand at a beach. The bongos are taken by them, with plans on becoming expert players and holding concerts to make lots of money and purchase lots of bananas. During gameplay, Donkey Kong has to beat the bongos to the rhythm of the music. The bongos are used in the same way in Donkey Konga 2 and Donkey Konga 3 JP.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat[edit]

Bongos in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat have a unique role of being used to control Donkey Kong, via the DK Bongo controller. Among other controls, hitting the left bongo makes Donkey Kong move left, hitting the right makes him move right, and hitting both makes him jump.

Mario Kart series[edit]

The Bongos appear in Mario Kart Arcade GP and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 as one of Donkey Kong's special items, under the name Conga. Upon using the Conga, the user will play a drumbeat on it for a short period of time, producing damaging sound waves. Any racers who come too close to the user during this time will be hit by the sound waves and lose speed.

Bongos in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast are special, jet-propelled vehicles used by the Kongs and Kremlings to race one another. In this game, each set of Bongos is personalized to match the user. For example, Donkey Kong's emblem is on his, and Diddy Kong's resembling his jetpack.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Bongos in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U are used by Donkey Kong during his Final Smash, Konga Beat, in which he plays the bongos and releases shockwaves capable of damaging nearby fighters. These bongos are modeled after the actual DK Bongo controller, and a START button and DK logo can be seen in the middle of the two bongos.

A pair of Bongos appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an Advanced-class support spirit, using artwork from Donkey Konga of Donkey Kong playing the bongos. The spirit grants its user the ability to reflect projectiles with a perfect shield. It can be purchased at Timmy and Tommy's for 1000 Spirit Points at regular price.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]

Bongos appear in the Donkey Kong Adventure DLC of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle as a weapon used by Donkey Kong during his Magnet Groove Technique, where he plays them to attract enemies closer to his current location.
