Bills (proposed laws)

Bills are proposals to make a new law or to change an existing one. Only Parliament can pass a bill. Each bill goes through several stages, giving MPs and the public the chance to have their say.

  • It's time to get involved

    Have your say

Our democracy works best when you get involved and have your say about the things that are important to you. You may do so by contacting your MP or making a submission.

    Acts and regulations

If Parliament agrees to a proposed law (bill), the bill becomes an Act. Some Acts include powers to make other laws, which are called regulations. All Acts and regulations can be found on the New Zealand Legislation website.
