Utah State University has a longstanding commitment to disability access. More than 55 years ago, USU began offering access services dedicated to students with disabilities. The Disability Resource Center at Utah State is proud to continue this important tradition of access.
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) at Utah State University (USU) is dedicated to equal access to all educational opportunities for students with disabilities. The DRC provides a range of services and accommodations designed to support students with disabilities in their academic and campus experiences. Some of the key services offered include:
- Providing Accommodations: The DRC meets with students to understand how their disability impacts them in the educational environment and to evaluate their need for accommodations. These accommodations may include extended time on exams, note-taking assistance, alternative format textbooks, assistive technology, and more.
- Academic Support: The DRC works with faculty and staff to ensure that accommodations are implemented in classrooms, labs, housing, and other university settings. They provide guidance on making courses and materials accessible.
- Advocacy and Support: The DRC advocates for students’ rights and helps them navigate challenges related to accessibility. They assist students in communicating with faculty or other departments when accommodations are needed.
- Assistive Technology: The DRC offers access to a variety of assistive technologies that can help students with disabilities succeed academically, such as screen readers, voice recognition software, and specialized software or hardware for specific needs.
- Consulting on Universal Design: The DRC promotes Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which encourages the development of learning environments that are accessible to all students, not just those with disabilities. This includes providing resources and workshops for faculty to implement inclusive teaching practices.
- Collaboration with Other Campus Services: The DRC works closely with other offices, such as the Registrar, Housing, and Counseling Services, to ensure that students receive comprehensive support across different aspects of campus life.
- Training and Outreach: The DRC provides training for faculty, staff, and students on disability awareness, accessibility, and inclusive practices to foster a more inclusive campus environment.
