I．Aims of the Study Group and Expected Contribution to the Global COE Program Ars Vivendi

(1) Topics, Objectives and Impacts
The study group will focus on a series of issues related to "aging" - the issues felt by those who have experienced or will experience their process of it, which is a part of their own natural life course. The issues are of society, medicine, healthcare, welfare, social network, or any of the two or more at a time while they are also of existence, risk, or wellness. The group has made discourse analysis on the issues around "the bedridden elderly (netakiri rojin)," focusing on practices of their rehabilitation, development of the discourse related to the discovery of "the bedridden" status, problems of weighting and redistribution in the social system, and issues related to the national healthcare system. The research will not only problematize an "ideal" way of aging but deal with various issues in the contemporary society, situating "aging" as a starting point of reflection. The study group will open up possiblities to intervene a variety of issues related to "aging."

(2) Contribution to the Program
The study group will contribute to Program objectives, especially to "Archive and Research" through the different research activities by graduated students, post doctoral fellows, and the JSPS research fellow. The members will also explore, in a collective manner, what is happening around "aging" both implicitly and explicitly, and the discorse costructed around it, then study related issues that exist in the society, medicine, welfare system, or ethics. This approach will lead to collection and stockage of extensive information and further discussion on "aging" issues.

II. Research Planning, Methodology, and Publication

(1) Planning
We will hold several group meetings in a fiscal year. Besides, the members will regularly exchange and share, by emails and construction of a database, their views and acquired data from their respective research fields.

(2) Methodology
Communication througn a listserv will enable each member to actively partcipate in important parts of research activities such as sharing, analysing and discussing information or data and current development of each member's research. These activities will also be electronically shared with other graduate students and people not affiliated to Ritsumeikan University. The achievemnts will be put into the database timely and correctly.

(3) Publication of Achievements
The group will publish their research achievements mainly through emails and as archive date in the database of "aging". The study group will also enrich contents of oral presentations delivered at the annual meeting of Japan Welfare Sociology Association in June, 2009 in order for the members to contribute to an academic journal.

- ICHIDA Yoshihiko: Philosopher. Professor at the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies, Kobe University. Author of Ranciere: New 'Philosophy of Music (2007) and others. He is the editor of the coming book based on a series of interviews with Dr. ISHII.

- Brainstorming.
- Members will submit an article to Core Ethics, a bulletin published by Graudate School of Core Ethics and Frontier Sciences of Ritsumeikan University in September. By July they will research the related materials assigned to them and report about "the bedridden elderly," focusing on 1) its supposed condition, 2) its context, and 3) what has been said about it. Things to be discussed: the beginning and end of this term - context, relation to the government social welfare policy for the elderly.
- Other points were raised: family as nursing resource, different positionings or interests of the parties concerned and their families, care managers, service providers about certification of need in the nursing care insurance system, place of nursing (home or facility), difficulty in understanding the need of the elderly with dementia and in defining their "abuse," and so on. The members will also cover these points and share knowledge each other in their presentation in July.
