NAIR,B.M.C. (B.Mohanachandran Nair)

Born on 20th May 1941. Father: Balakrishna Pillai.K. Mother: Janaky Amma.Sri. B.Mohanachandran Nair, otherwise known as B.M.C.Nair is a reputed diplomat and well-known novelist. He joined Indian Foreign Service in 1965 and served as the indian High Commissioner of Mosambique, Switzerland, Jamica and Singapore. Later he was appointed as Indian Ambassador to Kuwait. After retirement, he is settled at Chennai and actively engaging in various social activities. He has written eight novels. His famous novel "Kalika" was translated into Tamil. A film was alos produced based on this novel.

NAIR, M.K.K. (KRISHNAN KUTTY NAIR.M.)

Born on 29 December 1930. Father: Kesava Pillai. Mother: Janaky Amma. M.K.K. Nair was a renowned administrator and well-known cultural activist. He had deep imprint in art, literature and culture.. He was selected to Indian Administrative Service in 1950. He started his career as Sub-Collector of erstwhile Madras State. Later he was appointed as Deputy Secretary of Government of India. Project Manager of Bhilai Steel Plant, General Manager & Managing Director of Fertilizers And Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT) are some of the positions held by him. He made substantial contributions for the development of the industrial sector. His contributions to the uplift of Kath Kali will be remembered for ever. He also served as the Chairman of Kerala Kalamandalam and Member of Sangeetha Nataka Academy. He passed away on 27 September 1987.

NAIR. (Dr.) S.K

Born on 1905 (12 Medam 1080-M.E.). Father: Prof.K.Sankara Pillai. Mother:
M.Narayani Amma. Born in 1917. Father: Narayana Pillai. Mother: Kalyani Amma. Dr.S.K.Nair was a language scholar, literary critic and writer. He was the Head of Department of Malayalam of Madras University. He enriched Malayalam literature through his novels, dramas, poetry, and essays. He translated Kamba Ramayana from Tamil to Malayalam. There are more than 70 works at his credit. Marakkatha Kathakal (3 Vols) is considred as his best work and it won Kerala Sahithya Academy award. Samskara Kedaram, Narmasallapam, Vicharamanjari are his other famous works. He was also a member of Film Censor Board. He passed away on 2 January 1984.




NAIR.T.K.A.

Born in 1941. Father: Karakuzhy Krishna Pillai. Mother:Thottuvelil Bharathy Amma. T.K.A.Nair is a top-level bureaucrat who is working as Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister. He started career as College Lecturer. He was selected to IAS in 1962. He was the Principal Secretary in the office of the Prime Minister. He also served as Chief Secretary to Government in Punjab.






NAMBOOTHIRIPPAD.E.M.S. (EMS)

Born in June 13, 1909 at Perinthalmanna, Malappurm District. Father:Parmeswaran Namboothiri. Mother: Vishnudatha Antharjanam. E.M.Sankaran Namboothirippad (EMS) was an internationally renowned Marxian philosopher, author, orator, administrator and great leader of communist and socialist movement. He was the first Chief Minister of Kerala State and the first Chief Minister of the Communist Government elected through democratic process. EMS is a great personality who created history and who walked along with the history. There are no other leaders in Kerala who influenced the modern Kerala than EMS. During his younger age, he associated with Yoga Kshema Sabha, an organisation found by radical Brahmin youths to eradicate malevolent rituals and practices of the community. Deeply influenced by the national movement, he joined Congress party and plunged into the independence struggle. In 1932 he was imprisoned along with other congress leaders. In 1934 he was elected as the All India Joint Secretary of Congress Socialist Party. In 1937 he along with P.Krishna Pillai, K.Damodaran and N.C.Sekhar found the Kerala Chapter of Communisty party secretly. In 1938, leftists and socialists captured the leadership of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). In 1940 the national leadership dismissed KPCC owing to it allegiance to communist movement. Then EMS and his friends declared the formation of Communist Party of India (CPI) and he gave leadership to several agitations and reformative movements for the uplift of poor and oppressed class of people despite the resistance from every corner. When the party was banned during 1939 to 1942 and 1948 to 1952 he went underground and gave leadership to the party. While EMS was acting as the General Secretary of CPI, the State of Kerala was formed in 1956. When the first election to the state legislature was declared in 1957 February, CPI decided to contest in the elections. CPI won 65 out of 126 seats and formed the first Government of Kerala under the leadership of EMS. His Government took several radical measures especially in the field of land reforms and education sector. This provoked the religious and communal forces, who were holding monopoly in land and educational institutions. They joined together and started struggle against the policies of the new Government known as Vimochana Samaram (liberation struggle). Succumbed the pressure of the communal forces, the Government of India dismissed EMS Government on July 31, 1959 by invoking Article 356 of the Constitution of India. In March 1967 EMS again became the Chief Minister of Kerala. But he resigned on October 24 due to difference of opinion with coalition parties. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1957 to 1977. EMS was the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Legislature from 1970 to 1977. EMS dedicated his life to the Communist Party. He contributed all his properties to the party. He became a member of the party's Central Committee in 1941 and elected to the Polit Bureau of the party in 1950. When Communist Party faced a split in 1964, he stood with Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the General Secretary of the CPI (M) for 13 years from 1978. Politics was only the one side of his personality. The other side of his individuality was that of a philosopher and littérateur. He wrote 77 books in Malayalam and 20 in English in addition to numerous essays. His works can be classified under politics, history and literature. EMS passed away on March 18, 1998.



NARAYANA MENON, NALAPPAT

Born on 1887. Nalappat Narayana Menon was an eminent poet and writer. It was he who translated Victor Hugo's Les Miserable into Malayalam. He came to the forefront among Malayalam writers through his melancholy Kannuneerthullikal. He passed away on October 3, 1954.


NARAYANA PANICKER. P.K.

Born on 30 August 1930. Father:M.N.Velu Pillai. Mother: Lekhmukutty Amma P.K.Narayana Panickr was a brave and efficient leader of Nair Service Soceity. He was able to render his valuable service in all fields of Kerala society. He took over the office of NSS General Secretary on 31st December 1983. After Mannathu Padmanabhan, he was the first to serve the NSS for such a long period as General Secretary. Prior to his assuming charge as General Secretary, he was the Treasurer of the NSS. He was the Chairman of National Democratic Party, member of Kerala University Senate, member of M.G. University Syndicate, member of Guruvayoor Devaswam and Chairman of Changanassery Municipal Council.He passed away on 29th Februvary 2012

NARAYANAN NAIR, PALA

Born in 1911. Father: Keepallil Sankaran Nair. Mother: Parvathyamma. Pala Narayanan Nair is a renowned poet. He began composing fine poems while a student in high school. He was a teacher by profession. His first work, Pookkal, was published in 1935. He is the winner of Kerala Sahithya Academy award, Puthezhathu Raman Menon award, Mooloor award and the first Vallathol award. More than forty books are at his credit. He passed away on 11th June 2008.

NARAYANAN. R

R.Narayanan was born on 7th January 1938 in Madras, now Chennai . His father K.Ramunni Menon was in the ICS of the British Govt. and his mother was the grand daughter of the late Maharaja Visakham Tirunal. Narayanan was educated in Madras and earned his BA (Hons) in Mathematics from the Loyola College Madras University. Thereafter he appeared for the IAS examination and was inducted into the service in the 1962 batch. He was allotted to the State of Kerala and held for the next 30 and odd years various positions both within and outside the State. He was collector of Alleppey from 1968 to 1970. From 1976 to 1985 he was specially chosen by Govt of India to be the Development Commissioner of the newly formed State of Sikkim and on repatriation to Kerala he served the State as Finance Secretary for 4 years from 1986 to 1990. He was then selected as Addl Secretary Ministry of Defence in Govt of India and while serving in that capacity he was recalled to the State to be the Chairman of the State Electricity Board. He was then reposted to Govt of India as Chairman Food Corporation of India and retired in the year 1996 as Secretary Dept of Youth Affairs and Sports in the HRD Ministry. After retirement he functioned as Devaswom Commissioner of the Travancore Devaswom Board for 2 years and subsequently he became Chairman, pay revision Commission of the Kerala State, which gave its report in 2006.
He is currently leading a quiet retired life in Trivandrum adjacent to the pristine waters of the Vellayani lake with his wife Geetha Narayanan. He has two children a son Govind Menon who lives in Los Angeles and a daughter Karthika who is currently based in Washington DC.



NARAYANAN.K.R. (Kochery Raman Narayanan)

Born on February 4, 1921 at Uzhamalakkal in Kottayam District. K.R.Narayanan was the eleventh President of Indian Union. Before became the President of India, K.R.Narayanan held a vide variety of career and professions. He started his career as a teacher. Then be accepted the job as a journalist in The Hindu. Having won scholarship, he went for higher studies in England. Prime Minister Pandit Jawarlal Nehru, who understood the capabilities of Narayanan, inducted him into Indian Foreign Service. Narayanan was the Indian Ambassador to Thailand, Turkey and to China. In 1978 he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University. In 1980 he was appointed as the Indian Ambassador to the U.S.A. Adter retirement, he contested to the Parliament in the 1984 general elections and won from the Ottappalam constituency. He was inducted to the Central Cabinet as a Minister of Foreign Affairs, Science & Technology and Space in the Ministry of Rajiv Gandhi. He was elected as the Vice-President of Indian Union in 1992 and held office till he was elected as the President of Indian Union in 1997. Narayanan was the first person from Kerala who elected to the highest office in India. He passed away on l9 November 2005
NARAYANAN.M.K..

Born in 1934. Father: Kelath C.V.Nair. M.K.Narayanan played a very vital role in different phases of the development of the nation. He was selected to Indian Police Service in 1955. He retired as the Director of Intelligence Bureau and Chairman of Joint Intelligent Command. Though he retired from service he was inducted as Special Advisor to Prime Minister in 2004.Consequent on the death of J.N.Dixit in 2005, he has been appointed as National Security Advisor. As the National Security Advisor, his responsibilities included advising the Prime Minister on foreign policy and defence matters, national security issues, including internal security and intelligence, and nuclear and space matters. He also led India in institutionalized security and strategic dialogues with several countries including Brazil, France, Japan, Sri Lanka, Germany, Russia, UK and the USA. He was also the Prime Minister's Special Representative for boundary talks with China. Narayanan took over as the Governor of the State of West Bengal on January 24, 2010.
NARYANAN.M.G.S.

Born on 20 August 1932. M.G.S. Naryanan is a well-known historical researcher of national repute. He is the Chairman of Indian Historical Research Council. He was the Head of Department of History in Calicut University. He contributed more than 40 theses in historical research. His important works are Cultural symbiosis of Kerala, Aspects of Aryanisation in Kerala, Foundation of South Indian Society and Culture.


NAYANAR.E.K.

Born on November 19, 1919 at Kannur. Father: Govindan Nambiar. Mother: Narayani Amma. The word "Nayanar" means one who leads and virtually he became the leader of the communist party and Kerala. He escaped from the clutches of ultimate penalty in connection with the famous Kayyur struggle and led a life of exile for six years. His life was a story of struggles and adventure. He served as the State Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Chief Editor of "Deshabhimani" daily and "Chintha" weekly, Member of Parliament etc. He was the Chief Minister of Kerala for three terms (1980-1982, 1987-1991,1996-2001). Nayanar belongs to the Kallyassery Tharavad, a noble family of Kolathiri royal line of Kannur. He lived and died as a leader in every respect. He passed away on May 19, 2004.
NEELAKANTA PILLAI, KAROOR

Born in 1898 at Ettumanoor (Kottayam District). Father: Neelakanta Pillai. Mother: Kunhilekshmy Amma. Karoor was a pioneer in the field of short story. Karoor was a blessed storyteller who contributed many simple and lovely short stories. He started career his as a teacher. His stories were translated to other Indian languages. He won Kendra Sahithya Academy Award and Kerala Sahithya Academy Awards. Karoor passed away in 1975.


NIRUPAMA MENON RAO

Born in 1950. Nirupama Rao was the Spokesperson on foreign affairs during while A.B.Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. Nirumapa Rao gave a she-touch to the diplomatic affairs of the country. She entered the Civil Service in 1973 and started career in Foreign Affairs Department. She served in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Nepal. Later she became Deputy Secretary, External Affairs Department. In her career she has served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Moscow, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry, Foreign Secretary of India, Ambassador to Peru and China, and High Commissioner to Sri Lanka. She has been working as Ambassador of India to the United States of America since August 2011.
