PADMANABHA MENON.K.P.

Born in October 1857. Father: Diwan Peshkar Sankunny Menon. Mother: Parvathy Amma. K.P.Padmanabha Menon was an eminent Advocate, Judge and Historian. Padmanabha Menon was the first person who attempted to write the history of Travancore. Through his work Kerala Charithram (History of Kerala), Padmanabha Menon surpassed the talents of his father. He also wrote Kochi Rajya Charithram (History of Cochin). He was also the Advocate General of Madras Government and member of Marumakkathayam Committee. He passed away on 1 May 1919.


PADMANABHA PILLAI, SREEKANTESWARAM.

Born on November 27, 1864 at Thiruvananthapuram. Father: Narayana Pillai. Mother Aananda Pillai Lekshmy Pillai. Sreekanteswaram Padmanabha Pillai was a scholar and lexicographer. But is popularly known as the author of Sabdatharavali, the first authoritative dictionary in Malayalam. An authentic Shabdakosham was not available in Malayalam till the publication of Sabdatharavali.He started his work on Sabdatharavali at his age of 32 and the first part of the book published in 1918. It took about 20 years to complete the dictionary, which is having 1600 pages. Padmanabha Pillai also published a pocket dictionary in 1906. Altogether he wrote about sixty books. He also served as the editor of the magazine Bhashavilasam . He passed away in 1946.


PADMANABHAN. T.

Born in 1931. T.Padmanabhan is an accomplishedshort story writer. He has written a number of short stories, which have a special beauty and attractiveness. He was the Estate Manager of the FACT, Cochin. His important works are Prakaasam parathunna penkutti, Oru kathakrithu kurisil, Makhan Singhinte Maranam, T. Padmanabhante Theranjetutha kathakal, Saakshi, Harison Sayvinte Naaya, Veetu Nashtappetta Kutti, Gouri etc.


PADMARAJAN. P.

Born on 23 May 1945. Father: Anantha Padmnabha Pillai. Mother: Devaki Amma. P.Padmarajan was a Novelist, Cine Director and Script Writer. He started his career as a programme announcer in the A.I.R. and remained there till 1986. He retired voluntarily when he began writing scripts for the films. His stories deal with violence, romance, mystery, passion and jealousy, anarchism. All stories written by him are the best ones in Malayalam literature. His very first novel Nakshathrangalae Kaaval won the Kerala Sahithya Academy award. Apart from writing film scripts for other film directors, he started to direct films based on his own screenplays. His first film is Peruvazhiyambalam. Many of his films kept a balance between intellectual and commercial applications. He introduced many new actors in Malayalam screen like Ashokan, Rahman, Jayaram, etc. He passed away on 24 January 1991.


PADMINI

Father: Thankappan Pillai. Mother: Saraswathy Amma. Padmini is a blessed dancer and actress. She excelled herself in many different styles of dance from Bharatnatyam to Western. She has acted and danced in more than 250 films. She was a top star not only in Bollywood but also in four other Indian regional language films - Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu. She was trained classical dance under Guru Gopinath. She made her film debut when she was at her age of 17, in Uday Shankar's "Kalpana". She had a film career that spanned over 40 years. She passed away on November 2006.





PANDIT KARUPPAN

Born on May 24, 1885 at Cheranallur in Ernakulam District. Father: Sri. Ayyan. Mother: Smt.Kochupennu. Pandit K.P.Karuppan was a distinguished poet and social reformer who fought against the untouchability, racial discrimination and for the uplift of oppressed class. After primary education, he underwent higher studies at the Kodungallur Kovilakom (royal mansion). The Prince of Cochin gave encouragement to him and with his aid Karuppan could study Sanskrit. He started writing poems at his age of 14 years. He was a teacher in Ernakulam Maharajas College. Later, he was elected to the Cochin Legislative Council (in 1924). Kerala Varma Valiya Koi Thampuran conferred him the title Vidwan (scholar) and the Prince of Cochin awarded him the title Kavithilakan (great poet). Lankamardanam, Nyshadham (dramas), Bhymeeparinayam, Urvasi (translations), Sakunthalam Vanchippattu, Kavyapedakam (poems), Kairalee Kouthukam, Jalodyanam, Chithralankaram, Rajarajaparvam, Vilapageetham are his works. Jathikummi, a poem written by him describes the suffering and agony of the oppressed people who faced racial discrimination at his times. He passed away on March 23, 1938.




PANICKER. K.C.S.

Born in 1911. Father: Madhava Menon. Mother:Narayani Amma. K.C.S. Panicker was a veteran visual artist. He had inborn abilities in the field of drawing and each of his work is always different and quite modern. He had done his first work at the age of 12 years. He was the Principal, Fine Arts School, Chennai and he established "Kalakendra" at Chennai. He was a Member Lalithakala Academy and won several national level awards. He passed away in January 1977.


PANICKER. K.M., SARDAR

Born on 3 June 1895. Sardar K.M.Panicker was a distinguished diplomat, author and historian. He published more than 50 works. He was Indian Ambassador to China, France and Egypt. He was the founder of the daily, Hindustan Times in 1925. Sardar Panicker also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University. He was the Member of the State Re-organization Committee immediately after independence. He passed away on 10 December 1963.



PANIKER. P.N.


Born on 3 March 1909. Father: Govinda Pillai. Mother: Janaky Amma. Sri.P.N.Panicker was the life and soul of the literacy and library movement in Kerala. The Grandhasala (Library) programme, which developed and spread throughout Kerala with the active involvement of people, was an outcome of the relentless efforts of Sri.P.N.Panicker. He passed away on19 June 1995, at the age of 86. The Government of Kerala observes 19 June annually as Vayanadinam (Day of Reading) to honour his contributions to the library and literacy movemnet.



PARAMESWARAN.P

Popularly known as Parameswarji, P. Parameswaran Born at Cherthala village in Alappuzha district in the year 1927. He completed his education in SB College Changanassery and University College Thiruvananthapuram. He came into contact with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh during his student days. He took over as organizing secretary of Jan Sangh in 1957. He was jailed during the emergency period. Parameswaran worked as Director of Deendayal Research Institute in New Delhi after his release from prison. He also keeps his close association with Sri Ramakrishna Mutt and Advaita Ashram, Kalady. Parameswaran has won many awards and recognitions. In 2004, the Government of India conferred 'Padma Sri' upon him in recognition of his valuable contributions to the society. He has authored many books in Malayalam and English. "Beyond all isms to Humanism" is one of his famous works. His books on Maharishi Aurobindo ,Marx and Vicekananda ,Chatrapathi Shivaji and Swami Vivekananda's teachings are well acclaimed. He is a renowned thinker in Kerala. He is the director of Bharatiya Vichara Kendra and the president of Vivekanada Kendra, Kanyakumari

PREMACHANDRAN.N.K..
Born on 25th May 1960
Father: N.Krihna Pillai
Mother: Maheswary Amma
N. K. Premachandran is a political leader of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) and Member of Parliament from Kollam Lok Sabha constituency. He was the first rank holder of Law degree of the University of Kerala in the year 1985. He started his political career through the student organisation of RSP. During his political career he held various positions at both state and national level. He was elected as Member of the Navaikulam Grama Panchayat between 1987 and 1995. He also served as a Member of District Panchayat in 1995. He was elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1996 and thereafter in 1998, 2014 from Kollam Constituency. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2000. He was elected to Kerala legislative assembly from Chavara assembly constituency in and inducted as the minister for Water Resources in the government of Kerala. During the tenure of Cabinet Minister for Water Resources he was selected by the ‘Asianet’ for the award of “Best Minister”.

 

Dr.PREM NAIR

Dr. Prem Nair is a renowned Gastroenterologist and a skilled clinician par excellence. He is the Medical Director of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.
After obtained MBBS degree from National Medical College of Bombay University, he had pursued a Doctor of Medicine (D.M.) and completed his Fellowship of American College of Physicians (F.A.C.P.) in Hepatology from the School of Medicine at University of Southern California in June 1986.
Nair joined the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences at Kochi campus of Amrita University as the Medical Director in 1998.  He also serves as the Professor at the Department of Gastroenterology at the School of Medicine, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi.
Before joining the Amrita Institute of Medical Science, he was practicing as Clinical Assistant Professor, Director of Endoscopy at the Good Samaritan Hospital, California, Co-Director of Pancreatio-Biliary Institute of Southern California, Consulting Gastroenterologist of California Medical Centre.  Dr. Nair also holds the office of the President of Association of Healthcare Providers (India).

 



PAUL. M.P..

Born on May 1, 1904 at Vaappuzha. Father: Menochery Poulose. Mother: Rosamma. M.P.Paul was an eminent critic. He was a teacher in St.Thomas College, Thrissur, S.B.College, Chanaganassery and Mar Ivanious College, Thiruvananthapuram. He also established tutorical centres at Thrissur, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram, which were the centres of knowledge. He was he founder President of Sahithya Pravarthaka Sahakarana Sanghom. Cherukathaprasthanam, Novel Sahithyam and Soundary Nireekshnam are some of his famous works on literary criticism.

 




PAZHASSI KERALAVARMA RAJA

Actual date of birth of Pazhassi Raja is not known. It is believed that he was born in 1775. Pazhassi Raja belonged to Kottayam dynasty of North Malabar. When Tippu Sultan invaded Malabar many royal families migrated to Travancore. But Pazhassi Raja did no migrate. He established hiscapital at Pazhassi and defended Tippu Sultan. Since his capital was at Pazhassi, he was known after his capital. He was a great patriot who fought against British supremacy over the native states. He was a master in guerilla warfare. Though he fought courageously against the British, he was defeated in the year 1805. He swallowed his diamond ring and committed suicide before being caught by the British soldiers.




PILLAI.G.P. BARISTER

Born on February 2, 1863. Barrister GP Pillai was one of the earliest Indian Freedom Fighters from Kerala who fought against the British Empire with his powerful writings. Barrister G.P. Pillai is the only Keralite mentioned in the autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi. G.P. Pillai completed his BA from the University of Madras. Later her was admitted to the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in London. Barrister GP Pillai played a major role in the formation of "Malayali Memorial" in 1891. He is the founder of Madras Standard, the first English language newspaper in South India. Even before forming the idea of national feeling, Barister G.P.Pillai shook the British Empire through his powerful writings.Though he lived only for 39 years, his life was eventful and lasting for many years. He was an eminent Journalist and Advocate. He fought against the autocratic rule of Diwan of Travancore. His nnumerable articles mainly criticizing the authorities made him a sour in the eyes of administrators. "Represent India" "Indian National Congress Men" are his famous works. He passed away on October 21, 1903.

 

  POONTHANAM

Poonthaanam was an ardent devotee of Guvuvaayoorappan and one of the important devotional poets of Malayalam. He is believed to have lived before Ehuthachan. His famous work is Jnanappana. Jnanappana is the expressions of his grief-stricken feeling on the death of his only son. It is the most reminiscent, dynamic, simple, natural and melancholic poem in Malayalam. He wrote poetry as an effective medium of self-expression. . Santhaana Gopalam Pana, Ghanasamgham, Sreekrishna Karnamritam, Aanandamritham, Noottettu Hari are his other works.

 



PRAKASH KARAT

Born in 1958. Prakash Karat is the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the State Secretary of CPM Delhi and member of party's Polit Bureau. He is a member of famous Karat family at Palaghat belonging to Karat Achutha Menon who wrote Viruthan Sanku, a famous Malayalam Novel.


PREKASH BABU.K

Prekash Babu is the Assistant Secretary of the Communist Party of India, Kerala State Council from 2012 and formerly he was the Secretary of CPI Kollam Dist. council. He represented Pathanapuram constituency of the Kerala Legislative Assembly twice (from 1991 to 2001). He was the Chairman of the Committee on Subordinate Legislation for the period from 1996 to 2001. He also served as a member of the Senate of the Kerala University and President of the All India Kissan Sabha Kerala State council. Formerly he served as the Headmaster of Manjakkala U.P.S which was later upgraded and now named as Indira Gandhi Memorial Vocational Higher Secondary School in Kollam District.  After taking law degree, he started practice at the Courts at Punalur in Kollam Dist. He also served as the President of Avaneeswaram Service Co-operative Bank from 1987 to 2002, President of Pathanapuram Thaluk Marketing Co-operative Society and the President of Kollam District Co-operative Group Hospitals. He also served as a member in the Committee for Decentralisation in Kerala headed by Prof. S.B. Zen (Zen Committee) and served as the Vice Chairman of Consultative Committee for Local Self Governments in Kerala from 2006-2011.
   
PREM NAZIR

Born in 1929 March at Chirayinkil near Thiruvananthapuram. Prem Nazir was the super star and evergreen hero of Malayalam cinema having many records. He found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for having acted in largest number of films. Hero of more than 700 films, hero of largest number of films in which he paired with same heroine, release of 39 films in a year are some of his other records. His genuine name is Abdul Khader. He graduated from the S.B.College, Changanassery. He made his first appearance in the silver screen in the year 1952 through the film Marumakal. He was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. Enne Thediyethiya Kathapathrangal is his autobiography. He passed away on January 16, 1989.

PRIYADARSHAN

Born on 30 January 1957 at Ambalapuzha
Father: Soman Nair
Mother: Rajamma
Priyan is a film director, script-writer, and producer. In a career spanning over four decades, he has directed more than 95 films in various Indian languages, predominantly in Malayalam and Hindi, while also having done a few films in Tamil and two in Telugu. On completion of his post-graduate course in Philosophy, Priyadarshan began his career in Malayalam cinema in the early 1980s and was active for the last four decades. Towards 2000s, he moved to Bollywood and remained active throughout the decade. He has done about 26 films in Hindi alone, the highest number of films done by any Bollywood director after David Dhawan. In 2013, he again shifted his focus to Malayalam cinema. Best known for his comedy films, Priyadrshan has also produced some action and thriller films. His collaboration with Mohanlal, a popular cine artist won tremendous popularity during the 1980s and 1990s. Priyadarshan has won many awards both from the State and Central government for his movies. He was also awarded Padma Sri in 2012.

 

PUDUSSERI RAMACHANDRAN (Dr.)

Born on 23 September 1928
Father: Damodaran Pillai
Mother: Janaki Amma
Dr. Pudusseri Ramachandran is an illustrious litterateur, teacher, and scholar of Malayalam language. He was among the forerunners who revolutionalised Malayalam literature. He had an active political life during his student days and expelled from his school for participating in the Quit India Movement. Later he became an ardent follower of communist party and a leader of Students Federation. During 1951-53 period he was the secretary of the Communist Party of India Vallikunnam-Sooranad unit. On completion of his BA (Hons.), he became a college teacher. He served as a lecturer in SN College, Kollam and later in the University of Kerala. While working as the Professor and Dean of Oriental Language Faculty in the University of Kerala, he retired from service. Pudusseri was the brain behind the first World Malayalam Conference held in 1977 under the auspicious of Kerala University. It was due to Puthussery’s tireless efforts that Malayalam was finally recognised as a Classical Language by the Union Government in 2013. His poems have been consolidated and published in 11 volumes. Kerala Panineeyam, Kerala Panineeya Vimarsanam, Pracheena Malayalam, Kerala Charithrathinte Adisthhaana Reghakal are some of his important works. Puthussery has won many prestigious awards including the Ezhuthachchan Puraskaaram (2015), Fellowship of Kerala Sahithya Academi, Vallathol Award, Asan Smaraka Puraskaram, and Translation Award of Kendra Sahithya Academy. He passed away on 14th March 2020
