Etymology

From Old Japanese, first attested in the Kojiki, the oldest extant historical record of ancient Japan, completed in 712 CE.

Derived from はち (ya, eightmany) + くも (kumo, cloud) + (tatsu, to rise, stand).

Adnominal

八雲やくもりつ(やくもた) (ya kumo tatsu

  1. many clouds rising, an allusion to 出雲いずも (Izumo, a placename, especially Izumo Province)

Usage notes

Some scholars interpret the allusion to づるくも (izuru kumo, layered clouds) instead of 出雲いずも (Izumo).[1]
