Glyph origin

[edit]

Ideogrammic compound (會意かいい会意かいい) : くち (mouth) + じゅう (ten) – many voices in harmony. じゅう (OC *ɡjub) may also act as a phonetic component. It is an ancient variant form of きょう (OC *ɦleːb) used since antiquity.

It was later borrowed for かのう because きょう (xié) and かのう are homophones in some varieties of Northern Wu. This usage was made official in Simplified Chinese.
