IND vs CAN highlights, T20 World Cup 2024: India vs Canada match in Florida abandoned due to wet outfield

India vs Canada T20 WC highlights: The Group A match of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup between India and Canada has been called off without a ball being bowled due to a wet outfield at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground on Saturday.

Saturday’s clash is also the third straight time a match in this tournament at Lauderhill has been abandoned after Sri Lanka-Nepal and Ireland-USA clashes faced the same fate. Former India cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Sanjay Manjrekar were extremely unhappy over the ground not being fully covered during the broadcast and strongly recommended in unison that a provision be made in ICC tournaments regulations about venues to be fully covered in case of inclement weather.

When the teams arrived at the venue, the outfield was still wet, with some soggy spots in and around the 30-yard circle. Covers were still firmly on the square under gloomy skies at the venue, which witnessed some early morning rain and had scattered thunderstorms predicted for the entire day, leading to a delay in the scheduled coin toss.

A pitch inspection was scheduled for 8 pm IST and on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Sharfuddoula were seen inspecting the ground and talking to the ground staff. Another inspection was scheduled for 9 pm IST, with super soppers and three to four massive hairdryers deployed to dry the damp areas on the outfield.

By 9:03 pm IST, the umpires inspected the ground again and spoke to the head of ground staff and match referee Andy Pycroft, following which teams were seen shaking hands, which signalled the abandonment of the match.

The result also means that India, the 2007 champions, sign off unbeaten from Group A with seven points from four games and will now turn their focus towards their first Super Eight game against Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 20.

The abandonment has also led to Canada replacing 2009 champions Pakistan at the third spot in the Group A points table. Pakistan, who are already out of the competition, will have to win their last match against Ireland at Lauderhill on Sunday to finish third in the group.

IND vs CAN Live Score: Previous match was washed out at Lauderhill

The wet conditions in the outfield of the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill on Friday morning led to the washout of co-hosts USA's match against Ireland, which caused a major upset and a historic moment.

The rained-out match meant the 2009 winners Pakistan bowed out of the tournament, while the US made a historic entry into the 'Super 8s' in their debut appearance in the event.

The no-result outcome in USA vs Ireland match also left the remaining two games in Group A of elementary interest as India are assured of topping the group, followed by USA at number two as the two teams to progress.

19:57 (IST) Jun 15

IND vs CAN Live Score: Will Florida weather allow India a chance to extend unbeaten run?

India stormed into the 'Super 8s' of the T20 World Cup on the back of three consecutive wins in Group A, but whether the 2007 champions can extend that unbeaten run on Saturday against Canada hugely depends on the Florida weather relenting.

Florida has been experiencing flash-flood situation over the past few days with a state of emergency declared in some parts, which leaves the fate of India vs Canada on Saturday hanging in the balance.

IND vs CAN Live Score: 'Virat has never...'

"He has never opened for India in the T20 World Cup before so it is a new position for him and conditions were also not in favour of him. As an opener, you don't get a second chance as your first mistake becomes your last one. I feel there is nothing to worry about and maybe it is the calm before the storm"

- said Sanjay Bangar

18:54 (IST) Jun 15

IND vs CAN Live Score: 'It is the calm before the storm'

Former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar feels Virat Kohli's dismal run in the ongoing T20 World Cup is not a worrying sign as it is the "calm before the storm".

Kohli had only scored 1 and 4 against Ireland and Pakistan respectively before departing on a duck against the USA in the last encounter. The former India captain has been playing as an opener alongside skipper Rohit Sharma in the tournament.

Brushing aside any doubt on Kohli's form, Bangar mentioned the challenging nature of the New York pitch where India played all three games. The veteran also highlighted the fact that it is the first time that Kohli is opening in the ICC tournament.

Having shifted their base to Florida for their final group stage match against Canada, Kohli will have the final chance to add runs under his name before moving to Super Eight.

IND vs CAN Live Score: Canada not short of determination

On the other hand, Canada are a bit green behind the ears but not short of determination, as they had manifested during their 12-run win over Ireland.

Players such as opener Aaron Johnson can spring a surprise on their day.

But stopping this superior quality Indian side on its tracks could be a task beyond the Canadians, who might be banking more on the predicted spell of disruptive rains for that.

IND vs CAN Live Score: Time to bring in KulCha?

However, it will not be entirely surprising to see the big wigs bring in some changes in the bowling department. They can think of giving a chance to either Kuldeep Yadav or Yuzvendra Chahal or even both against Canada.

In that case, India might give a break to Jadeja and Axar Patel, another impressive performer with both bat and ball.

18:04 (IST) Jun 15

IND vs CAN Live Score: India's pace attack

The trio of Jasprit Bumrah (five wickets), Hardik Pandya (seven wickets), Arshdeep Singh (seven wickets) have not given anything to the rival batters. The performance of Pandya and Arshdeep would be particularly pleasing to the management.

Both of them had a torrid time in the IPL on various counts and were heavily criticised.

But here, they have put all that behind them to lead India's attack along with the ever-reliable Bumrah.

The think-tank will also hope that at some stage Mohammed Siraj (one wicket) and Ravindra Jadeja, who is yet to pick up a wicket, will join their colleagues, even though both of them have not leaked runs.

IND vs CAN Live Score: 'Spin Basher' Shivam Dube

'Spin Basher' Shivam Dube has been on a tailspin since his arrival in the US, but a laboured 31 off 35 balls against the co-hosts might just have fetched him another game ahead of the waiting Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

If India want to bring in Jaiswal, then it has to be as an opener and Kohli will have to return to his No.3 slot.

While India's batting might, just as other teams, has been neutralised by the drop-in pitches in New York, their bowling worked like a well-oiled machine on those very tracks.

17:23 (IST) Jun 15

IND vs CAN Live Score: Pant and Suryakumar in form

Creditably, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav have more than made up for Kohli.

Pant made 36 and 42 against Ireland and Pakistan, good enough contributions for India to emerge victors.

Suryakumar overcame a diffident start to the tournament just at the right time, making a crucial fifty against the USA.

16:49 (IST) Jun 15

IND vs CAN Live Score: Turnaround in fortunes for Kohli!

Perhaps, an 1850km trip from New York to Florida might bring with it a turnaround in fortunes for Kohli, who must be hurting after those ordinary outings.

The pitch at the Broward County stadium might not be as spiteful as the one in New York, where the uneven bounce of the tracks and the slow nature of the outfield became bigger talking points than the cricket that was played.

What would ease some pressure on him is the fact that that the lean run has not really affected the team's fortunes.

However, the premier batter's low scores, particularly since he is opening alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, has put some pressure on the subsequent batters to take the India board forward.

16:42 (IST) Jun 15

IND vs CAN Live Score: Kohli's form a bothering point

Star batter Virat Kohli's string of low scores would be a concern for India when they square off against Canada in their final group match of the T20 World Cup on Saturday, hoping that the sky remains clear in this city even as several parts of Florida are ravaged by torrential rain.

With three consecutive wins, India are through to the Super Eight stage, which will be held entirely in the West Indies.

Kohli came into the T20 World Cup after setting the IPL ablaze, scoring upwards of 700 runs at a strike-rate of over 150 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Therefore, it wasn't an entirely misplaced expectation that he will continue to fire in the ICC showpiece, which is perhaps his final chance to earn India an ICC World Cup after 13 years.

But three matches have gone by, and Kohli has five runs at an average of 1.66, including a 'Golden Duck' against the USA.

His form has provided an interesting subplot to the game against tournament-debutants Canada, which is otherwise inconsequential, at least for India.
