Following the Treaty of Lisbon, the European External Action Service is responsible for running 139 EU Delegations and Offices operating around the world, representing the European Union and its citizens globally.
The EU Delegations play a key role in presenting, explaining and implementing EU’s foreign policies. They also analyse and report on the policies and developments of their host countries and conduct negotiations in accordance with given mandates.
Maintaining political dialogue, administering development aid, overseeing EU trade issues and building cultural contacts, are just some of the tasks undertaken by EU Delegations.
EU Delegations' staff comes from a number of different departments of the European External Action Service and the European Commission, local employees who provide valuable expertise on the ground as well as diplomats and experts from the Member States.
Most delegations are responsible for EU relations with one single country. Some oversee relations with a group of countries or a region, and can be responsible for other smaller Delegations. Other EU Delegations are dedicated to maintaining relations with multilateral or international organisationssuch as the African Union or the United Nations.
