There was a time when the word sigma simply referred to a greek letter that looked like an E. The word would often be heard inside circles of linguistic proffesionals and people with a high understanding of greek culture; however, outside of those realms, uttering the word "sigma" was deemed inappropiate and would make you look like a huge nerd. And everything was peaceful.

However, times have changed. Now, whenever someone hears the word "sigma", a chill goes down their spine. And it's all the fault of those meddling kids, I'll tell you that! They've perverted this beautiful word, to the point it's not recognizable anymore. Now, sigma is one of those internets may-mays that lacks any kind of logic or common sense, just like that series of that man coming out of a toilet or that other video of a chicken nugget singing a gibberish version of the country classic Cotton Eyed Joe.

The word "sigma" now lives rent-free in the vocabulary of idiot children -which resembles less like the English language and more like gibberish-, appearing every time in phrases where it shouldn't belong. This has created new expressions such as sigma balls and what the sigma?, which are the horror of every renowned and respected linguist and English teacher.

Whether this trend will somehow pass the test of time, or slowly vanish due to Gen Alpha wanting to forget about this dark age of their childhood, is a question that is yet to be answered but I'm placing my bets on the latter.
