Glyph origin

[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲けいせい形声けいせい, OC *pʰaːʔ) : semantic (water; river) + phonetic はじめ (OC *paʔ).

Etymology

[edit]

Austroasiatic; compare *pʰaʔ > Vietnamese phá (inlet, cove, lagoon) (Schuessler, 2007). Indirectly related to Proto-Kam-Sui *pwaŋ⁵ (bank, shore) and Saek [script needed] (viaŋꟲ¹, bank of a river) by way of * ~ * alternation (ibid.).
