Many Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) holdings come from donations, including materials offered by faculty, leading academics, Friends of the Libraries, NC State alumni and supporters, and members of the public.
Special Collections Curators review materials to determine if they have significant historical or research value to the library, university, and greater community and may accept items based on several criteria. These include, but are not limited to their relevance to key collecting areas, the condition and format of the materials, and overall research value.
The University Archives at NC State University Libraries holds collections that document university history, consisting of primary source material created or collected by university staff, faculty, administrators, and students since the founding of the university. Members of the campus community can contact Special Collections for more information about what materials are appropriate for the University Archives. Campus units wanting to give records to the University Archives can follow the transfer instructions.
The storage environment for all SCRC materials is carefully monitored to provide a controlled climate and proper security for long-term preservation. Incoming donations are processed by SCRC staff and made available to the public for research in the NC State University Libraries' Special Collections Reading Room located in the D. H. Hill Jr. Library.
