ギリガンが……のちになって導入した「反転図形」の比喩(Gilligan, Carol 1987 "moral orientation and moral development")のほうが、両者の関係を適切に表している
(cf.品川[2002: 17])。……ケアの倫理と正義の倫理が異なる根源に拠って立つことをいっそう的確に示しているからである。ケアの倫理による成熟の説明(「どのひともだれかによってケアされなければならない」)が「すべてのひとがケアされる」事態を表しているとしても、それを「どのひともケアされる権利をもつ」とか「どのひとも平等にケアされるべきだ」というように、権利・平等などの正義の倫理のなかで多用される概念を用いて翻訳することはできない。というのも、権利・平等・正義が語る「どのひと」「すべてのひと」は特定のだれでもない抽象的な人格を指しているのにたいして、ケアの倫理が到達をめざしている理想的状況は、「どの特定のひともだれか特定のひとによってケアされ、後者の特定のひともまた誰か特定のひとによってケアされる」というしかたでケアのネットワークがすべての個人を余すことなく編み込む事態を指しているからだ。ケアの倫理のこの理想からすれば、「どのひともケアされる権利をもつ」といった普遍的な定式化はあまりに抽象化・一般化に過ぎ、その話し手が、今、自分の目の前にいる特定の他者へのケアをすることを保証しない。話し手は鈍感にも身近な他者への現実のケアを忘れているかもしれない。まさにこのことがケアの倫理が正義の倫理を批判する点である。(42)
これにたいして、ノディングスでは、ケアこそが一切の倫理の基盤である。ケアするという「道徳的視点をとることに正当化はありえない―この道徳的観点こそどんな種類の正当化よりも先行するからだ」〈95〉。……ここではケアこそが倫理を基礎づけているとされるのだから、問いは「なぜ、ケアすることをケアするべきなのか(why care about caring)」〈7〉というかたちをとる。この問いへの答えの核に、倫理的自己へのケアは位置している。(43-44)
◆ケアワークとは何か
ケアにワークをつければ、ケアワークとなるが、ケアとケアワークとはどう違うだろうか。/そのものずばり "Care Work"をタイトルとする英語圏の主要な編著―Daly, Mary, ed., 2001, Care Work: The Quest for Security, International Labor Office.とMeyer, Maddonna Harrington, ed., 2000, Care Work: Gender, Class, and the Welfare State, Routledge.―では、ケアとケアワークの定義は互換的に用いられている。後者の書物では、ケアについての明示的な定義はなく、その代わりにエイベルによる「ケアの歴史的パースペクティブ」(2000)という論文が収録されており、ケア概念が、歴史的にどう変化してきたかが論じられている。ケアが文脈依存的であるとすれば、当然それに対して(暫定的な定義のほかには)定義を与えることができない。そして、これらの著者たちは、ケアが愛情と労働の両方を含むことを認めるが、ケアがいつ愛情になり、どこから労働になるかもまた文脈依存的であるから決定できない。/多くはフェミニストの手になるこれらの著作が、ケアを論じるのに、ケアワークを自明の前提として概念化するのは、「家事労働」「不払い労働」「愛の労働」等の理論の蓄積がすでにあるからである。そしてケアワークという概念を用いるからこそ、ケアがワークではない特殊ケースを理論化することができる。そして「不払い労働」という概念がすでに利用可能だからこそ、ケアワークのなかで、有償の労働と無償の労働の両方を考察することもできる。/たとえば先述のエイベル(2000)は、19世紀には上流階級にとっては高齢者、病人、障害者、子ども等のケアは家事使用人の仕事であり、代わって家事使用人たちは自分の家族のケアに従事することができないディレンマを抱えていたことを指摘する。ケアが「中産階級」の「既婚女性」の無償の労働になったのは、近代家族成立以後のことであり、したがってケアには(家事と同じく)、ジェンダー、階級、人種(民族)が変数として色濃く刻印されていた。/本論でも、わたしは基本的にフェミニストのケアワーク論を継承する。その点で、デイリーらの以下の立場を共有している。第一に、ケアの価値は尊重されるべきこと。第二に、ケアは労働として取り扱われるべきこと。第三に、ケアはジェンダー公正の立場から配分されるべきこと。(Daly ed. ◆メイヤロフの「ケアの本質論」への批判 nn ……メイヤロフへの批判を以下の四点にわたって付け加えよう。/第一は、ケアの対象が人格からアイデアまでを含むような過度の一般化を経ることによって、かえって無定義概念と化し、分析や記述上の妥当性を失っていることである。/第二に、「ケア」概念のインプリケーションが「子どもへのケア」に限定されているために、病人、障害者、高齢者への言及が不在である。/第三に、ケアの対象が依存と保護、そしてコントロールの対象に限定されることで、パターナリズムをまぬがれない。/第四に、「父親のケア」がしばしば述べられるのに対し、「母親のケア」は見事に不可視化されていることを通じて、ここでは言説による脱ジェンダー化の政治が働いている。実践場面ではジェンダー化されていることが周知のケアを、あたかもジェンダー非関与であるかのように扱うこと自体が、言説上の遂行性を持っている。(上野[2005: 31-32])
◆ケアの社会学化
ケアの倫理を論じた社会学者の研究には、Chambliss, Daniel, 1996, Beyond Caring, University of Chicago(=2000 浅野耀子訳『パヂの向こう側―看護親が直面する道徳妬‘倫理妬矛盾』日本看護協会出版会)がある|組薪論の研究者であるチャンブリベは‖詳細な観察とツンタビュー調査にもとづいて、看護職の倫理的ジレンマについて論じたが、彼の結論は明快なものである。倫理を問うためには、選択の自発性とそれに伴う責任がなければならないが、多くの看護職が置かれている状況は、医師との権力関係における従属的なものである。看護職が「自律的決定者」であるという想定が非現実的であれば、看護職に「倫理」を問うことはむずかしくなる。そしてチャンブリスは、この状況が多くの女性(職)に共通することを指摘するのを忘れない。ケアの与え手に共通するのも、同じ状況である。ケアが強制労働であるような現実のなかで、倫理を問うことは何を意味するだろうか。彼がこのような結論に達することができたのも、彼が「ケアが何であるべきか」ではなく、「ケアが実際に何であるか」を、経験的観察にもとづいて、研究した結果である。わたしたちに必要なのも、このような態度であろう。(上野[2005: 34-35])
