Glyph origin

edit

Phono-semantic compound (形聲けいせい形声けいせい, OC *baːs) : semantic (earth) + phonetic (OC *buʔ).

Etymology

edit

A late formation (こうおこり). Earlier forms of southern Chinese toponyms using the character were often written with the homophone (MC buH) in historical records dated from the Northern Wei to Ming dynasties, which has been conjectured to be a transcription of an earlier Kra-Dai word (Kang, 2010). Cf. (, “market”).
