Etymology

An orthographic borrowing from Japanese 硅(けい)素もと(そ) (keiso) (Wu, 2010); pronunciation from its phonetic part 圭けい (guī) (ibid.), in turn from Dutch keiaarde (“silicon”). The usage of 矽 (xī) is dated in Mainland China as it is homophonous to 硒 (xī) "selenium" and 錫すず／锡 (xī) "tin". In Taiwan, these three words are not homophonous.

1933 work 化學かがく命名めいめい原則げんそく says:

Silicon舊きゅう譯わけ一いち作さく硅，一いち作さく矽，硅由ゆかり日ひ名な珪素けいそ孳演而成なり，因いん爲ため固體こたい，故こ改あらため王おう旁つくり爲ため石いし；於義よし既すんで無む可か取と，不ふ如用よう諧聲かいせい之これ矽。 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
