Ideogrammic compound (會意かいい会意かいい) : abbreviated たかし + しつ. Its exact structure changes depending on region and time period, but for most of its existence it has been a phono-semantic compound (形聲けいせい形声けいせい) . The phonetic has always been これ (OC *tjɯ) or とめ (OC *kjɯʔ).

Oracle bone inscriptions: phonetic これ (OC *tjɯ) + .
Chu slips: phonetic これ (OC *tjɯ) + しつ
Jin slips:
Qin dynasty: Phonetic とめ (OC *kjɯʔ) + こう + しつ

Shuowen Jiezi interprets it as ideogrammic compound (會意かいい会意かいい) : これ (foot) + abbreviated こう (high) + しつ (building) – a watch tower. The Shuowen Jiezi Zhu considers (*tjɯ) to be the sound component.
