Phono-semantic compound (形聲けいせい形声けいせい, OC *ɡroːŋs) : phonetic とも (OC *kloŋ, *ɡloŋs) + semantic おのれ (oneself)

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *grwaŋ (village; crossroads) (STEDT). Cognate with Tibetan གྲོང (grong, house; village; town). Old Khmer កុរុង (kuruṅ, to rule; ruler; king) (whence Khmer ក្រុង (krong) and Thai กรุง (grung)) is probably unrelated (Schuessler, 2007).

Wu ろう (lon, “alley”) and Jin くろなみ (heh4 lon2, “hutong”) are dialectal variants which support the Old Chinese *gr- initial cluster of ちまた (OC *ɡroːŋs) (Schuessler, 2007). Compare also 衚衕胡同ふーとん (hútòng, “hutong”).
