Ideogrammic compound (會意かいい会意かいい) : つめ (hand) + (kneeling person) – a hand suppressing a kneeling person.

According to たま in his book 《ぞうていいん書契しょけいこうしゃく》(1915), the character is an ideogram of a hand suppressing a kneeling person. The character そもそも () (to suppress) was used to preserve the original meaning.
