Parking sensors

We installed parking sensors in two areas of Dunedin to give us useful information about parking patterns.

The small solar-powered sensor, which looks like a light set into the road, senses when a vehicle arrives in a car park and when it leaves. It also shows when and how long car parks are empty.

We are not using this information for enforcement but only so we can better understand parking use, parking behaviour and how we can make changes to make parking more efficient and meet the needs of users. It will help us make decisions on parking changes that are supported by the community.

The sensors provide parking trend data and help us implement parking strategies. Eventually, the data will be used to help drivers find vacant car park spaces which will reduce traffic congestion and time spent circling the block looking for a place to park.

We plan to install sensors in other areas including the CBD and South Dunedin.
