Mt Allan - Pulpit Rock

This page contains information on mountain biking track around Mt Allan-Pulpit Rock.

From Mosgiel, head northwest on Gordon Road to a five-way intersection. Turn right onto Dukes Road and immediately left back onto Gordon Road. Ride along until you meet up with Taioma Road, which at the top of a steep incline turns to gravel. Further along the road there is a decent drop into Taioma. From here you begin to enter Mt Allan forest.

You can find a nice view of the Taioma Railway Viaduct from a no exit side road on your left off Mt Allan Road. Carry on up the long steep hill, along the ridgeline and downhill into the Big Stream valley.

You can ride the track to Pulpit Rock in either direction from the Big Stream crossing. Cross Big Stream, hop over a locked gate, ride up hill for about 2.5km, then turn right onto another road and ride along the ridge. This road becomes a 4WD track after 2km and Pulpit Rock is located about 3.5km along the track.

From the base of Pulpit Rock, travel south along the 4WD track. After about 5km take a right onto a 4WD track straight down hill into Big Stream (watch out for sharp corners). Ride beside Big Stream for about 3-4km back to the crossing.

There are also many options for exploring the forest roads that branch off Mt Allan Road but you must have a permit from Wenita Forest Products Ltd.
