About this track

One of the best tracks in the Dunedin area with stunning views of Taieri, Dunedin, Long Beach, Blueskin Bay and Karitane. From Swampy Summit, walk through diverse alpine tussock land with species such as Sun Orchids, Celmisia, Edelweiss and Flax lining the track edges. As you drop down from the alpine bush line into the forest, the flora shifts rapidly from Flax and Dracophyllum to mature Rimu, Miro and Totara forest. One for the fern lovers, the Leith Saddle Track is home to Dicksonia tree ferns as well as epiphytic ferns and Blechnum. The track is gravelled throughout and well maintained with steps, foot bridges and bench over looking impressive lookout areas. However, the track is very steep in places and anyone walking it needs to be well prepared with water, snacks, and clothing should the weather suddenly change.

Getting there:

The Leith Saddle Track can be accessed from either the Swampy Summit or from the Waitati Valley Road carpark.
