Information we hold in our rates database

The Council’s rating information database

The information displayed for each property is taken from the Council's rating information database (RID) and rates record. The RID is a list of information that is used to set and assess rates on a property (rating unit) in a particular year. The rates record includes other information on the state of the rates account. You can find out your property's valuation and rates details by searching our rates information database. The information we hold in the RID is publicly available.

Withholding personal details

You can withhold your personal details from the public Rating Information Database. To do so, you need to request this in writing, on the Withholding Names Application form in the Related information area (see Withholding-Names- Form.pdf at the bottom of this page)

Public information

We can give the following information to the public.

  • Ratepayer's name and postal address (not available online)
  • Total rates for the current year
  • Total estimated rates for the next rating year
  • Legal description
  • Capital value, land value and value of improvements, any special rateable values
  • Area in hectares
  • Chart of instalments
  • Classification of property (residential, non-residential or farmland)

Please note – we’ve upgraded our rates information webpage to make it clearer and easier for the public to use. We’ve also removed some of the content previously displayed there to ensure consistency with other councils.

Ratepayer information (including names unless withheld) is only available via our Customer Service team for people living in Dunedin, by ringing (03) 477 4000 or visiting our service centres.

Private information

The following information is not public and will not be given out:

  • Occupation history

  • Arrears information
  • Remission or rates relief information

Put it in writing

You can request that your name and/or postal address be withheld from rates information under Section 28 a, b or c of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002. You need to request this in writing, on the Withholding Names Application form in the related information area.

Due to the Privacy Act, outside organisations, such as Inland Revenue or Work and Income, who are requesting information about your rates situation must put their request in writing to us.

If you want previous valuation values you can write to us or to Quotable Value NZ Ltd, P. O. Box 215, Dunedin
