1 And God pronounced his blessing on Noe and his sons; Increase, he said, and multiply, and fill the earth. 2 All the beasts of earth, and the winged things of the sky, and the creeping things of earth, are to go in fear and dread of you, and I give you dominion over all the fishes of the sea. 3 This creation that lives and moves is to provide food for you; I make it all over to you, by the same title as the herbs that have growth. 4 Only, you must not eat the flesh with the blood still in it. 5 The shedder of your own life-blood shall be held to account for it, whether man or beast; whoever takes the life of his brother-man shall answer for it to me. 6 Man was made in God’s image, and whoever sheds a man’s blood must shed his own blood in return.[1] 7 And now, increase and multiply; occupy and fill the earth.

1 Benedixitque Deus Noë et filiis ejus. Et dixit ad eos: Crescite, et multiplicamini, et replete terram. 2 Et terror vester ac tremor sit super cuncta animalia terræ, et super omnes volucres cæli, cum universis quæ moventur super terram: omnes pisces maris manui vestræ traditi sunt. 3 Et omne, quod movetur et vivit, erit vobis in cibum: quasi olera virentia tradidi vobis omnia. 4 Excepto, quod carnem cum sanguine non comedetis. 5 Sanguinem enim animarum vestrarum requiram de manu cunctarum bestiarum: et de manu hominis, de manu viri, et fratris ejus requiram animam hominis. 6 Quicumque effuderit humanum sanguinem, fundetur sanguis illius: ad imaginem quippe Dei factus est homo. 7 Vos autem crescite et multiplicamini, et ingredimini super terram, et implete eam.

8 This, too, God said to Noe, and to Noe’s sons: 9 Here is a covenant I will observe with you and with your children after you, 10 and with all living creatures, your companions, the birds and the beasts of burden and the cattle that came out of the Ark with you, and the wild beasts besides. 11 Never more will the living creation be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again a flood to devastate the world. 12 This, God said, shall be the pledge of the promise I am making to you, and to all living creatures, your companions, eternally; 13 I will set my bow in the clouds, to be a pledge of my covenant with creation. 14 When I veil the sky with clouds, in those clouds my bow shall appear, 15 to remind me of my promise to you, and to all the life that quickens mortal things; never shall the waters rise in flood again, and destroy all living creatures. 16 There, in the clouds, my bow shall stand, and as I look upon it, I will remember this eternal covenant; God’s covenant with all the life that beats in mortal creatures upon earth. 17 Such was the pledge God gave to Noe of his promise to all living things.

8 Hæc quoque dixit Deus ad Noë, et ad filios ejus cum eo: 9 Ecce ego statuam pactum meum vobiscum, et cum semine vestro post vos: 10 et ad omnem animam viventem, quæ est vobiscum, tam in volucribus quam in jumentis et pecudibus terræ cunctis, quæ egressa sunt de arca, et universis bestiis terræ. 11 Statuam pactum meum vobiscum, et nequaquam ultra interficietur omnis caro aquis diluvii, neque erit deinceps diluvium dissipans terram. 12 Dixitque Deus: Hoc signum fœderis quod do inter me et vos, et ad omnem animam viventem, quæ est vobiscum in generationes sempiternas: 13 arcum meum ponam in nubibus, et erit signum fœderis inter me et inter terram. 14 Cumque obduxero nubibus cælum, apparebit arcus meus in nubibus: 15 et recordabor fœderis mei vobiscum, et cum omni anima vivente quæ carnem vegetat: et non erunt ultra aquæ diluvii ad delendum universam carnem. 16 Eritque arcus in nubibus, et videbo illum, et recordabor fœderis sempiterni quod pactum est inter Deum et omnem animam viventem universæ carnis quæ est super terram. 17 Dixitque Deus ad Noë: Hoc erit signum fœderis, quod constitui inter me et omnem carnem super terram.

18 These, then, were the names of Noe’s three sons, who came out of the Ark with him, Sem, Cham and Japheth; and of these, Cham was the ancestor of Chanaan. 19 All three were Noe’s sons, and from them the race of mankind overspread the earth. 20 And now Noe turned farmer, and on the ground he tilled, he grew a vine. 21 So he came to drink wine, and, drunk with it, lay all naked in his tent. 22 And Cham, Chanaan’s ancestor, saw how his father’s body lay naked, and went out to tell his two brothers of it; 23 whereupon Sem and Japheth spread a cloak over their shoulders, and walked in backwards to cover their father’s nakedness, their faces turned away, so that they never caught sight of his naked body. 24 When Noe had slept off his wine, he found out how his younger son had treated him; 25 Cursed be Chanaan, he said, he shall be the slave and drudge of his brethren. 26 He said, too, Blessed be the Lord God of Sem; may Chanaan be a slave to him. 27 May God give Japheth dwelling-space,[2] and let him share the tents of Sem, but let Chanaan be his slave. 28 And Noe lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood, 29 so that his lifetime, when he came to die, had filled the measure of nine hundred and fifty years.

18 Erant ergo filii Noë, qui egressi sunt de arca, Sem, Cham et Japheth: porro Cham ipse est pater Chanaan. 19 Tres isti filii sunt Noë: et ab his disseminatum est omne genus hominum super universam terram. 20 Cœpitque Noë vir agricola exercere terram, et plantavit vineam. 21 Bibensque vinum inebriatus est, et nudatus in tabernaculo suo. 22 Quod cum vidisset Cham, pater Chanaan, verenda scilicet patris sui esse nudata, nuntiavit duobus fratribus suis foras. 23 At vero Sem et Japheth pallium imposuerunt humeris suis, et incedentes retrorsum, operuerunt verenda patris sui: faciesque eorum aversæ erant, et patris virilia non viderunt. 24 Evigilans autem Noë ex vino, cum didicisset quæ fecerat ei filius suus minor, 25 ait:

Maledictus Chanaan,
servus servorum erit fratribus suis. 26 Dixitque:

Benedictus Dominus Deus Sem,
sit Chanaan servus ejus. 27
Dilatet Deus Japheth, et habitet in tabernaculis Sem,
sitque Chanaan servus ejus. 28 Vixit autem Noë post diluvium trecentis quinquaginta annis. 29 Et impleti sunt omnes dies ejus nongentorum quinquaginta annorum: et mortuus est.
