1 The Lord gave Moses this message 2 for the sons of Israel: Here are rules to be kept, when you have reached the settled home I mean to give you. 3 When you offer the Lord ox or sheep in burnt-sacrifice, or by way of welcome-offering (whether in payment of a vow, or out of devotion, or because you would greet the Lord with acceptable fragrance on occasion of some solemn feast), 4 the man who is immolating such a victim must make the Lord a bloodless offering as well. This must be a tenth of a bushel of flour, kneaded in three pints of oil, 5 with the same measure of wine for a libation, for every lamb offered.[1] 6 For every ram a fifth of a bushel of flour, two quarts of oil, 7 and the same measure of wine, a fragrant offering for the Lord’s acceptance. 8 But when, by way of burnt-sacrifice, or offering for a vow, or welcome-offering, thy victim is a bullock, 9 with each bullock thou must use three tenths of a bushel of flour, six pints of oil, 10 and the same measure of wine, a fragrant offering, this too, for the Lord’s acceptance. 11 A separate offering must be made 12 to go with each bullock, or ram, or lamb, or kid. 13 Native-born or foreign residents, 14 all must use the same rite in doing sacrifice; 15 precept and award are binding on you and on the aliens that dwell with you, without distinction.

Per agnos singulos 6 et arietes erit sacrificium similæ duarum decimarum, quæ conspersa sit oleo tertiæ partis hin: 7 et vinum ad libamentum tertiæ partis ejusdem mensuræ offeret in odorem suavitatis Domino. 8 Quando vero de bobus feceris holocaustum aut hostiam, ut impleas votum vel pacificas victimas, 9 dabis per singulos boves similæ tres decimas conspersæ oleo, quod habeat medium mensuræ hin: 10 et vinum ad liba fundenda ejusdem mensuræ in oblationem suavissimi odoris Domino. 11 Sic facies 12 per singulos boves et arietis et agnos et hædos. 13 Tam indigenæ quam peregrini 14 eodem ritu offerent sacrificia. 15 Unum præceptum erit atque judicium tam vobis quam advenis terræ.

16 And the Lord gave Moses this command, 17 to be laid on the sons of Israel: 18 When you have reached the land I mean to give you, 19 you must not eat the bread its harvest yields without assigning to the Lord first-fruits 20 from your table. Just as you set apart first-fruits when your corn is threshed, 21 you must give the Lord the first share when your dough is kneaded.

22 It may be you will neglect one of these commandments through inadvertence; so many has the Lord given to Moses 23 to be handed on to you, from the day when first he spoke to you till now. 24 If it is the whole congregation that has thus unwittingly offended, they must offer a bullock, a burnt-sacrifice to please the Lord with the smell of its burning, and the bloodless offering and libations which due order demands; a goat, too, by way of offering for a fault.[2] 25 So the priest will make intercession for the whole congregation of Israel, and their fault shall be pardoned. It was an unwitting offence, and even so they have brought the Lord burnt-sacrifice, and a victim for fault, to atone for their error. 26 When the whole congregation is guilty of such a fault through inadvertence, not only the people of Israel, but all the aliens that dwell among them, will receive forgiveness. 27 If it is one person only that has unwittingly offended, the sacrifice due for the fault will be a yearling she-goat; 28 and when the priest makes intercession for what was inadvertently done amiss, grace and pardon will be given. 29 This law about faults of inadvertence must be observed by all alike, native-born or foreign resident. 30 But if anyone, citizen or alien, is guilty of an offence through pride, and in a spirit of rebellion against the Lord, he is lost to his people. 31 Would he despise the Lord’s word, annul his commandment? That fault deserves death, and he will be held to account for it.

22 Quod si per ignorantiam præterieritis quidquam horum, quæ locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, 23 et mandavit per eum ad vos, a die qua cœpit jubere et ultra, 24 oblitaque fuerit facere multitudo: offeret vitulum de armento, holocaustum in odorem suavissimum Domino, et sacrificum ejus ac liba, ut cæremoniæ postulant, hircumque pro peccato: 25 et rogabit sacerdos pro omni multitudine filiorum Israël, et dimittetur eis, quoniam non sponte peccaverunt, nihilominus offerentes incensum Domino pro se et pro peccato atque errore suo: 26 et dimittetur universæ plebi filiorum Israël, et advenis qui peregrinantur inter eos: quoniam culpa est omnis populi per ignorantiam. 27 Quod si anima una nesciens peccaverit, offeret capram anniculam pro peccato suo: 28 et deprecabitur pro ea sacerdos, quod inscia peccaverit coram Domino: impetrabitque ei veniam, et dimittetur illi. 29 Tam indigenis quam advenis una lex erit omnium, qui peccaverint ignorantes. 30 Anima vero, quæ per superbiam aliquid commiserit, sive civis sit ille, sive peregrinus (quoniam adversus Dominum rebellis fuit), peribit de populo suo: 31 verbum enim Domini contempsit, et præceptum illius fecit irritum: idcirco delebitur, et portabit iniquitatem suam.

32 It happened once, as the Israelites were passing through the desert that a man was found gathering firewood on the sabbath day. 33 When he was brought before Moses and Aaron and the common assembly of the people, 34 they put him in ward, uncertain what they should do with him. 35 But the Lord said to Moses, His life must pay for it; he must be stoned by the whole multitude, away from the camp. 36 So they took him out and stoned him to death, as the Lord had bidden them.

37 This, too, was the Lord’s word to Moses, 38 Bid the Israelites pass blue cords through the corners of their cloaks, and hang tassels on them; 39 reminding themselves, as they look on these, of all the commandments the Lord has given them. They must not let their thoughts and eyes wander free, into all manner of unfaithfulness, 40 but rather bethink them of the Lord’s decrees and carry them out, a people set apart for their God; 41 and that God the Lord, who brought them out of the land of Egypt to make them his own people.

37 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen: 38 Loquere filiis Israël, et dices ad eos ut faciant sibi fimbrias per angulos palliorum, ponentes in eis vittas hyacinthinas: 39 quas cum viderint, recordentur omnium mandatorum Domini, nec sequantur cogitationes suas et oculos per res varias fornicantes, 40 sed magis memores præceptorum Domini faciant ea, sintque sancti Deo suo. 41 Ego Dominus Deus vester, qui eduxi vos de terra Ægypti, ut essem Deus vester.

[1] The Latin text here appears to join the words ‘for every lamb offered’ with the sentence which follows; probably through some error, since it destroys the meaning of verse 5 by leaving the victim unspecified.

[2] In Lev. 4.13 sqq. the people, in similar circumstances, offers the bullock as a victim for fault, not in burnt-sacrifice, and there is no mention of the goat. Some think the reference there is to faults of commission, here to faults of omission. There is a similar discrepancy between verse 27 here and verses 27 sqq. of Lev. 4.
