1 ἐπικάλεσαι δέ εいぷしろんἴ τίς σしぐまοおみくろんιいおた ὑπακούσεται ἢ εいぷしろんἴ τινα ἀγγέλων ἁγίων ὄψぷさいῃ 2 κかっぱαあるふぁὶ γがんまὰρろー ἄφρονα ἀναιρεῖ ὀργή πεπλανημένον δでるたὲ θανατοῖ ζぜーたῆλος 3 ἐγがんまὼ δでるたὲ ἑώρακα ἄφρονας ῥίζαν βάλλοντας ἀλらむだ{L'} εいぷしろんὐθέως ἐβρώθη αあるふぁὐτたうῶνにゅー ἡ δίαιτα 4 πόρρω γένοιντο οおみくろんἱ υうぷしろんἱοおみくろんὶ αあるふぁὐτたうῶνにゅー ἀπぱいὸ σωτηρίας κολαβρισθείησαν δでるたὲ ἐπぱいὶ θύραις ἡσσόνων κかっぱαあるふぁὶ οおみくろんὐκかっぱ ἔσται ὁ ἐξαιρούμενος 5 ἃ γがんまὰρろー ἐκかっぱεいぷしろんῖνにゅーοおみくろんιいおた συνήγαγον δίκαιοι ἔδονται αあるふぁὐτたうοおみくろんὶ δでるたὲ ἐκかっぱ κかっぱαあるふぁκかっぱῶνにゅー οおみくろんὐκかっぱ ἐξαίρετοι ἔσονται ἐκσιφωνισθείη αあるふぁὐτたうῶνにゅー ἡ ἰσχύς

1 Who will listen to thy plaint against God? Wilt thou turn to one of his angels for redress? 2 Impatience is a great murderer of fools; in their simpleness of heart, they repine at the injury, to their ruin. 3 Never yet did I see a fool secure in his possessions but I prophesied disaster, there and then, for his fair prospects. 4 And still would I see his children bereft of hope, ground down by false judgement, and none to bring redress; 5 his harvest a prey for hungry neighbours, himself for the armed robber, his wealth drunk up by thirsty mouths.[1]

et bibent sitientes divitias ejus.

6 οおみくろんὐ γがんまὰρろー μみゅーὴ ἐξέλθῃ ἐκかっぱ τたうῆς γがんまῆς κόπος οおみくろんὐδでるたὲ ἐξくしー ὀρέων ἀναβλαστήσει πόνος 7 ἀλらむだλらむだὰ ἄνθρωπος γがんまεいぷしろんνにゅーνにゅーᾶτたうαあるふぁιいおた κόπῳ νεοσσοὶ δでるたὲ γυπὸς τたうὰ ὑψηλὰ πέτονται

6 Never was ill without a cause; never did mischief spring up self-sown. 7 Man’s bent is for mischief, as sure as birds will fly.[2]

8 οおみくろんὐ μみゅーὴνにゅー δでるたὲ ἀλらむだλらむだὰ ἐγがんまὼ δεηθήσομαι κυρίου κύριον δでるたὲ τたうὸνにゅー πάντων δεσπότην ἐπικαλέσομαι 9 τたうὸνにゅー πぱいοおみくろんιいおたοおみくろんῦνにゅーτたうαあるふぁ μεγάλα κかっぱαあるふぁὶ ἀνεξιχνίαστα ἔνδοξά τたうεいぷしろん κかっぱαあるふぁὶ ἐξαίσια ὧνにゅー οおみくろんὐκかっぱ ἔστιν ἀριθμός 10 τたうὸνにゅー διδόντα ὑεいぷしろんτたうὸνにゅー ἐπぱいὶ τたうὴνにゅー γがんまῆνにゅー ἀποστέλλοντα ὕδωρ ἐπぱいὶ τたうὴνにゅー ὑ{P'} οおみくろんὐρανόν 11 τたうὸνにゅー πぱいοおみくろんιいおたοおみくろんῦνにゅーτたうαあるふぁ ταπεινοὺς εいぷしろんἰς ὕψος κかっぱαあるふぁὶ ἀπολωλότας ἐξεγείροντα 12 διαλλάσσοντα βべーたοおみくろんυうぷしろんλらむだὰς πανούργων κかっぱαあるふぁὶ οおみくろんὐ μみゅーὴ ποιήσουσιν αあるふぁἱ χかいεいぷしろんῖρες αあるふぁὐτたうῶνにゅー ἀληθές 13 ὁ καταλαμβάνων σしぐまοおみくろんφふぁいοおみくろんὺς ἐνにゅー τたうῇ φρονήσει βべーたοおみくろんυうぷしろんλらむだὴνにゅー δでるたὲ πολυπλόκων ἐξέστησεν 14 ἡμέρας συναντήσεται αあるふぁὐτたうοおみくろんῖς σκότος τたうὸ δでるたὲ μεσημβρινὸνにゅー ψηλαφήσαισαν ἴσしぐまαあるふぁ νυκτί

8 Wiser counsels for me; to the Lord himself my plaint shall be made, of God himself I will seek audience. 9 His magnificent counsels none may fathom, none reckon up his marvellous deeds. 10 His to grant the parched earth rain, watering the countryside; 11 his to exalt men of low esteem, to comfort the mourner with new hope. 12 Through him the crafty schemer is baulked of his aims; 13 cunning overreaches itself, and knavish plots are scattered to the winds; 14 wise fools, that blink in daylight, and grope their way blindly at full noon!

qui dissipat cogitationes malignorum,
ne possint implere manus eorum quod cœperant; 13
qui apprehendit sapientes in astutia eorum,
et consilium pravorum dissipat. 14
Per diem incurrent tenebras,
et quasi in nocte, sic palpabunt in meridie.

15 ἀπόλοιντο δでるたὲ ἐνにゅー πολέμῳ ἀδύνατος δでるたὲ ἐξέλθοι ἐκかっぱ χかいεいぷしろんιいおたρろーὸς δυνάστου 16 εいぷしろんἴηいーた δでるたὲ ἀδυνάτῳ ἐλπίς ἀδίκου δでるたὲ στόμα ἐμφραχθείη

15 So, from their slander and their violence, he rescues the poor and the unbefriended; 16 now, misery, take heart, let malice stand dumb with confusion!

17 μακάριος δでるたὲ ἄνθρωπος ὃνにゅー ἤλεγξεν ὁ κύριος νουθέτημα δでるたὲ παντοκράτορος μみゅーὴ ἀπαναίνου 18 αあるふぁὐτたうὸς γがんまὰρろー ἀλγεῖνにゅー πぱいοおみくろんιいおたεいぷしろんῖ κかっぱαあるふぁὶ πάλιν ἀποκαθίστησιν ἔπαισεν κかっぱαあるふぁὶ αあるふぁἱ χかいεいぷしろんῖρες αあるふぁὐτたうοおみくろんῦ ἰάσαντο 19 ἑξάκις ἐξくしー ἀναγκῶνにゅー σしぐまεいぷしろん ἐξελεῖται ἐνにゅー δでるたὲ τたうῷ ἑβδόμῳ οおみくろんὐ μみゅーὴ ἅψηταί σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん κακόν 20 ἐνにゅー λらむだιいおたμみゅーῷ ῥύσεταί σしぐまεいぷしろん ἐκかっぱ θανάτου ἐνにゅー πολέμῳ δでるたὲ ἐκかっぱ χかいεいぷしろんιいおたρろーὸς σιδήρου λύσει σしぐまεいぷしろん 21 ἀπぱいὸ μάστιγος γλώσσης σしぐまεいぷしろん κρύψει κかっぱαあるふぁὶ οおみくろんὐ μみゅーὴ φοβηθῇς ἀπぱいὸ κακῶνにゅー ἐρχομένων 22 ἀδίκων κかっぱαあるふぁὶ ἀνόμων καταγελάσῃ ἀπぱいὸ δでるたὲ θηρίων ἀγρίων οおみくろんὐ μみゅーὴ φοβηθῇς 23 θしーたῆρες γがんまὰρろー ἄγριοι εいぷしろんἰρηνεύσουσίν σしぐまοおみくろんιいおた 24 εいぷしろんἶτたうαあるふぁ γνώσῃ ὅτたうιいおた εいぷしろんἰρηνεύσει σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん ὁ οおみくろんἶκος ἡ δでるたὲ δίαιτα τたうῆς σしぐまκかっぱηいーたνにゅーῆς σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん οおみくろんὐ μみゅーὴ ἁμάρτῃ 25 γνώσῃ δでるたὲ ὅτたうιいおた πぱいοおみくろんλらむだὺ τたうὸ σπέρμα σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん τたうὰ δでるたὲ τέκνα σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん ἔσται ὥσπερ τたうὸ παμβότανον τたうοおみくろんῦ ἀγροῦ 26 ἐλεύσῃ δでるたὲ ἐνにゅー τάφῳ ὥσπερ σしぐまῖτος ὥριμος κかっぱαあるふぁτたうὰ καιρὸνにゅー θεριζόμενος ἢ ὥσπερ θιμωνιὰ ἅλωνος κかっぱαあるふぁ{Q'} ὥρろーαあるふぁνにゅー συγκομισθεῖσしぐまαあるふぁ 27 ἰδでるたοおみくろんὺ τたうαあるふぁῦτたうαあるふぁ οおみくろんὕτως ἐξιχνιάσαμεν τたうαあるふぁῦτά ἐστιν ἃ ἀκηκόαμεν σしぐまὺ δでるたὲ γがんまνにゅーῶθしーたιいおた σεαυτῷ εいぷしろんἴ τたうιいおた ἔπραξας

17 Happy the man, whom God chastens for his faults! The correction he sends thee never, on thy life, refuse. 18 Wounds he, it is but to heal; the same hand, which smote, shall medicine thee. 19 So in six perils thou shalt go unharmed, and find yet one deliverance more; 20 hunger shall not starve thee, sword wound thee, 21 slander find thee out, havoc reach thee; 22 rapine and dearth thou shalt defy. And besides all this, ravening beasts shall not daunt thee; 23 friendly soil for thee are the desert rocks, and the wild things are in league with thee; 24 secure thou shalt keep thy tent, or visit thy fair lands, and nought shall go amiss. 25 Be sure that thy posterity will increase; like the green grass thy race shall flourish; 26 and when go to the grave thou must, it shall be with strength undiminished, like ripe corn at harvest-home. 27 Here are thoughts tested and found true; well for thee if thou wilt heed them, and ponder them in thy heart.

A flagello linguæ absconderis,
et non timebis calamitatem cum venerit. 22
In vastitate et fame ridebis,
et bestias terræ non formidabis. 23
Sed cum lapidibus regionum pactum tuum,
et bestiæ terræ pacificæ erunt tibi. 24
Et scies quod pacem habeat tabernaculum tuum;
et visitans speciem tuam, non peccabis. 25
Scies quoque quoniam multiplex erit semen tuum,
et progenies tua quasi herba terræ. 26
Ingredieris in abundantia sepulchrum,
sicut infertur acervus tritici in tempore suo. 27
Ecce hoc, ut investigavimus, ita est:
quod auditum, mente pertracta.

[1] The text and interpretation of this verse are uncertain in the Hebrew.

[2] ‘Mischief’; literally, in the Latin version, ‘trouble’, but the context seems to shew that the other meaning of the Hebrew noun is to be preferred. The troubles man undergoes do not spring up haphazard; they are the fruit of his proneness to sin. ‘As sure as birds will fly’; the Hebrew text probably means ‘as sure as sparks will fly upwards’.
