1 ὑπολαβὼνにゅー δでるたὲ Σωφαρ ὁ Μιναῖος λέγει 2 ὁ τたうὰ πολλὰ λέγων κかっぱαあるふぁὶ ἀντακούσεται ἢ κかっぱαあるふぁὶ ὁ εいぷしろんὔλαλος οおみくろんἴεται εいぷしろんἶνにゅーαあるふぁιいおた δίκαιος εいぷしろんὐλογημένος γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ὀλιγόβιος 3 μみゅーὴ πολὺς ἐνにゅー ῥήμασιν γίνου οおみくろんὐ γάρ ἐστιν ὁ ἀντικρινόμενός σしぐまοおみくろんιいおた 4 μみゅーὴ γがんまὰρろー λέγε ὅτたうιいおた καθαρός εいぷしろんἰμみゅーιいおた τたうοおみくろんῖς ἔργοις κかっぱαあるふぁὶ ἄμεμπτος ἐναντίον αあるふぁὐτたうοおみくろんῦ 5 ἀλらむだλらむだὰ πぱいῶς ἂνにゅー ὁ κύριος λαλήσαι πぱいρろーὸς σέ κかっぱαあるふぁὶ ἀνοίξει χείλη αあるふぁὐτたうοおみくろんῦ μετὰ σしぐまοおみくろんῦ 6 εいぷしろんἶτたうαあるふぁ ἀναγγελεῖ σしぐまοおみくろんιいおた δύναμιν σοφίας ὅτたうιいおた διπλοῦς ἔσται τたうῶνにゅー κかっぱαあるふぁτたうὰ σέ κかっぱαあるふぁὶ τότε γνώσῃ ὅτたうιいおた ἄξιά σしぐまοおみくろんιいおた ἀπέβη ἀπぱいὸ κυρίου ὧνにゅー ἡμάρτηκας 7 ἦ ἴχνος κυρίου εいぷしろんὑρήσεις ἢ εいぷしろんἰς τたうὰ ἔσχατα ἀφίκου ἃ ἐποίησεν ὁ παντοκράτωρ 8 ὑψηλὸς ὁ οおみくろんὐρανός κかっぱαあるふぁὶ τί ποιήσεις βαθύτερα δでるたὲ τたうῶνにゅー ἐνにゅー ᾅδでるたοおみくろんυうぷしろん τί οおみくろんἶδας 9 ἢ μακρότερα μέτρου γがんまῆς ἢ εいぷしろんὔρους θαλάσσης 10 ἐὰνにゅー δでるたὲ καταστρέψῃ τたうὰ πάντα τίς ἐρろーεいぷしろんῖ αあるふぁὐτたうῷ τί ἐποίησας 11 αあるふぁὐτたうὸς γがんまὰρろー οおみくろんἶδでるたεいぷしろんνにゅー ἔργα ἀνόμων ἰδでるたὼνにゅー δでるたὲ ἄτοπα οおみくろんὐ παρόψεται 12 ἄνθρωπος δでるたὲ ἄλλως νήχεται λόγοις βべーたρろーοおみくろんτたうὸς δでるたὲ γεννητὸς γυναικὸς ἴσしぐまαあるふぁ ὄνにゅーῳ ἐρημίτῃ

1 Then answered Sophar the Naamathite: 2 Ready to speak should be ready to listen; glibness will not make an innocent man of thee. 3 Must all keep silence till thou hast done; shall none make answer to thy raillery? 4 Still thou wilt have it that all thy dealings[1] are upright, that thy heart, as God sees it, is pure. 5 Would he but speak one word in thy ear, make thee his confidant! 6 Would he but reveal to thee the secrets of his wisdom, in its ordered variety! Then wouldst thou learn that the penalty he is exacting of thee is less, far less, than thy sins deserve. 7 What, wouldst thou search out the ways of God, have knowledge unconfined of his omnipotence? 8 High as heaven is that wisdom, and thy reach so small; deep as hell itself, and thy thought so shallow! 9 Far as earth it stretches, wide as ocean; 10 will he sweep them all away, or confine them all in a little space, there is no gainsaying him. 11 He knows the false hearts of men, sees wickedness there, and wouldst thou have him overlook it? 12 Poor fools, that will have a mind of their own, and think they were born free as the wild ass!

1 Respondens autem Sophar Naamathites, dixit: 2

Numquid qui multa loquitur, non et audiet?
aut vir verbosus justificabitur? 3
Tibi soli tacebunt homines?
et cum ceteros irriseris, a nullo confutaberis? 4
Dixisti enim: Purus est sermo meus,
et mundus sum in conspectu tuo. 5
Atque utinam Deus loqueretur tecum,
et aperiret labia sua tibi, 6
ut ostenderet tibi secreta sapientiæ,
et quod multiplex esset lex ejus:
et intelligeres quod multo minora exigaris ab eo
quam meretur iniquitas tua! 7
Forsitan vestigia Dei comprehendes,
et usque ad perfectum Omnipotentem reperies? 8
Excelsior cælo est, et quid facies?
profundior inferno, et unde cognosces? 9
Longior terra mensura ejus,
et latior mari. 10
Si subverterit omnia, vel in unum coarctaverit,
quis contradicet ei? 11
Ipse enim novit hominum vanitatem;
et videns iniquitatem, nonne considerat? 12
Vir vanus in superbiam erigitur,
et tamquam pullum onagri se liberum natum putat.

13 εいぷしろんἰ γがんまὰρろー σしぐまὺ καθαρὰνにゅー ἔθしーたοおみくろんυうぷしろん τたうὴνにゅー καρδίαν σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん ὑπτιάζεις δでるたὲ χかいεいぷしろんῖρας πぱいρろーὸς αあるふぁὐτόν 14 εいぷしろんἰ ἄνομόν τί ἐστιν ἐνにゅー χερσίν σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん πόρρω ποίησον αあるふぁὐτたうὸ ἀπぱいὸ σしぐまοおみくろんῦ ἀδικία δでるたὲ ἐνにゅー διαίτῃ σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん μみゅーὴ αあるふぁὐλισθήτω 15 οおみくろんὕτως γがんまὰρろー ἀναλάμψει σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん τたうὸ πρόσωπον ὥσπερ ὕδでるたωおめがρろー καθαρόν ἐκδύσῃ δでるたὲ ῥύπον κかっぱαあるふぁὶ οおみくろんὐ μみゅーὴ φοβηθῇς 16 κかっぱαあるふぁὶ τたうὸνにゅー κόπον ἐπιλήσῃ ὥσπερ κかっぱῦμみゅーαあるふぁ παρελθὸνにゅー κかっぱαあるふぁὶ οおみくろんὐ πτοηθήσῃ 17 ἡ δでるたὲ εいぷしろんὐχή σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん ὥσπερ ἑωσφόρος ἐκかっぱ δでるたὲ μεσημβρίας ἀνατελεῖ σしぐまοおみくろんιいおた ζωή 18 πεποιθώς τたうεいぷしろん ἔσしぐまῃ ὅτたうιいおた ἔστιν σしぐまοおみくろんιいおた ἐλπίς ἐκかっぱ δでるたὲ μερίμνης κかっぱαあるふぁὶ φροντίδος ἀναφανεῖταί σしぐまοおみくろんιいおた εいぷしろんἰρήνη 19 ἡσυχάσεις γάρ κかっぱαあるふぁὶ οおみくろんὐκかっぱ ἔσται ὁ πολεμῶνにゅー σしぐまεいぷしろん μεταβαλόμενοι δでるたὲ πολλοί σしぐまοおみくろんυうぷしろん δεηθήσονται

13 But see, thy heart once guided aright, thy hands outspread to him in prayer, 14 thou hast but to cleanse thy hands of their wrong-doing, rid thy dwelling-place of the guilt that defies it. 15 Then thou mayst lift up thy head again, free from reproach, waver no more, tremble no more. 16 These miseries of thine shall be forgotten, or remembered gratefully, like floods that are overpast. 17 Radiance of noon shall dispel twilight, dawn shall rise where darkness seemed to envelop thee; 18 fresh confidence shall be thine, fresh hope; hidden away in safety[2] thou shalt sleep secure; 19 and that rest of thine, none shall disturb, suitors a many shall come to court thy favour.

tunc levare poteris faciem tuam absque macula;
et eris stabilis, et non timebis. 16
Miseriæ quoque oblivisceris,
et quasi aquarum quæ præterierunt recordaberis. 17
Et quasi meridianus fulgor consurget tibi ad vesperam;
et cum te consumptum putaveris, orieris ut lucifer. 18
Et habebis fiduciam, proposita tibi spe:
et defossus securus dormies. 19
Requiesces, et non erit qui te exterreat;
et deprecabuntur faciem tuam plurimi.

20 σωτηρία δでるたὲ αあるふぁὐτたうοおみくろんὺς ἀπολείψει ἡ γがんまὰρろー ἐλらむだπぱいὶς αあるふぁὐτたうῶνにゅー ἀπώλεια ὀφθαλμοὶ δでるたὲ ἀσεβῶνにゅー τακήσονται

20 The godless another doom awaits; their eyes shall grow faint with watching, and no rescue shall ever reach them; no other prospect they have but despair.

Oculi autem impiorum deficient,
et effugium peribit ab eis:
et spes illorum abominatio animæ.

[1] ‘Thy dealings’; the Hebrew text gives ‘thy doctrine’, but this is not in point. Job has claimed to be innocent, not to be infallible. It seems possible that there is some corruption in the text; meanwhile, the Latin word used occasionally has the sense of ‘dealings’ in general; cf. ‘he had dealings with Joab, son of Sarvia’ in III Kg. 1.7, ‘the God we have to deal with’ in Heb. 4.13. So also, ‘what she has done’ in Esther 1.17.

[2] ‘Hidden away in safety’; literally, ‘dug in’. It can hardly be supposed that the Latin version intends an allusion to burial.
